| It was pretty bad. It did have a couple classic lines. In the 1st episode
the Woman astronomer and the MIT guy managed to track the small asteroid pretty
well predicting that it would hit K.C. Then after breaking up the 2nd one they
seemed to have trouble tracking the big piece to see where it would hit. The
MIT guy in frustration shouted out something to the effect:
"The Earth! The Moon! The Sun! All Pulling in different directions!!!!!"
Of course the three body problem was solved by Newton and others 400 years
ago. They would have had to use that solution to track the 1st asteroid that
hit K.C. so why did they suddenly forget how to solve simultaneous sets of
differential equations?
Breaking up a large asteroid with lasers from one F-16 and one F-14 was quite
the trick. How did two fighters generate enough electricity to put that much
power into a laser? That would be like trying to melt a glacier with a small
flashlight.
Then what a coincidence that both large pieces headed straight toward U.S.
Cities. The 1st one hit dead center on the dam, the 2nd a direct hit on that
globe of lights in Dallas. Wow, a WWII bomber would take 5+ tries trying to hit
with that kind of accuracy.
Of course only the Woman Astronomer knew how to use the tracking facilities
at Cheyenne Mt. You think NORAD and SAC would have one guy who knew how the
equipment worked.
Then the doctors in the 2nd episode. "Helping people, that's what it's all
about". How about some pancakes with that syrup.
Along about that time it appeared that no more asteroids were on the way and
the rest of the show would be heroes crawling through the rubble so I switched
away. Fun to see all the goofs but once it became "rescue 911" it lost that
appeal.
The one other thing I liked was that they had lots of good airplane and
helicopter shots. Best part of the entire movie was rescuing the guy off the
roof in the 1st scene of episode 1. From there it went steadily down hill.
Oh, and here's another. You are being chased through the streets by the
flood. Do you head up to higher ground, or do you head down toward the river
and park on the bridge? Oh well, I guess you can't expect a lot from government
help.

| Well. I watched it and I liked it, even if some of it was a bit
hackneyed and old. The best part, IMHO, was that fact that the gummint
actually listened to the doomsayers. Usually they are laughed at with a
bit of a sneer and a "not in our lifetime" retort. Then "the BIG
DISASTER" hits, people scream, die, are hurt, there's a child who needs
saving or becomes a hero. The male and female leads fall in love from
the time together in hardship, stock footage (now computer generated
effects of dams bursting and explosions happen, (do they still use
squibbs?) and all because those in charge, (read stubborn politician
who's a pennypincher, like that's real :-) ) won't listen to the
scientist. Didn't happen here and that was refreshing.
Bright Blessings,

| I like Michael Biehn (sp?) so I thought I'd give it a try - lasted
about 1/2 an hour before giving up... lame lame lame!

| The first part(Sunday night) I thought was interesting but part two was
awful. To one of t he previous noters...the female lead was Annabella
Scorcsie(sp?). She is probably most famous from "Jungle Fever" with
Wesly Snipes.

And the mother in "The Hand that Rocks the Cradle".
You butchered the spelling of her name, but it's too early in the
week for me to correct it. 8^)
Sciorra, I think.

| Well, my wife and I renamed it to "Hemorrhoid" before switching off the
vcr.
The interesting thing is that when Michael Biehn was on Jay Leno, he
seemed embarassed about the movie, now that I've seen it, I know why.

Yes, I only watched it because of Micheal Biehn..too bad he took
this one up...yuck
The female lead was soooo bad...just read those idiot cards acting.
Does anyone know who the black firefighter was..my husband thought
it was the guy from LA Law with a mustache? Missed the credits.

487.8 | HIS NAME IS DON ???? I THINK | PCBUOA::CHENARD | | Wed Feb 26 1997 11:33 | 7 |
| I don't believe it was Blair Underwood. I think it was
the actor who used to be in the underwater/submarine show
with Roy Scheider a few seasons back - having a brain cramp cause
I can't think of the show's name.

| So far the best item I've seen about asteroid is a commercial for Star
Trek:Voyager. this week's episode is about a planet which is in the
path of an asteroid. don't know if it hits or not, but Voyager is
involved in the rescue. the commercial for voyager says something like
"you think you've seen rocks? this episode will kick NBC in the
ass...teroid" and something about "tune in Wed to have your tv rocked"
I'm not expecting much from this episode either, but it would be
interesting to learn if this idea came up before the idea of the
miniseries or what...
