439.0. "Taco Bell - Dana Carvey Show" by USCTR1::GHIGGINS (Oh Whoa Is Moe) Wed Mar 13 1996 11:01

Another show for Carvey. His second go-around with show of his
    own.

I didn't catch all of this but caught the opening skit with
Dana as Bill Clinton breast feeding the baby doll. I thought
this was funny in a weird kinda way. My wife was totally
    disgusted..

I caught other bits and pieces but will leave that for future
    discussion.....

    Any other opinions?

I laughed at some of the stuff. I really like Dana Carvey. The show
reminded me of old time saturdaynight live - but I don't think it will
    around long.

I did like that fact that he admitted that he was shamless and he
accepted Taco Bells offer on sponsering the show :-)

    RE; .0

I first thought the opening scene with Dana as Clinton was funny, UNTIL
they started with the breastfeeding bit and then I thought it was just
plain tasteless and thought they ruined would could have been funny.

I didn't watch the whole show but what I caught I have to agree with .1
in that it is very much like the older SNL skits and I doubt that it
    will last long.

From the Internet:

Taco Bell and Pizza Hut don't find Dana Carvey funny. Barely 24 hours
after Carvey's "Saturday Night Live" style skit show debuted on ABC
Wednesday, the fast-food companies pulled sponsorship of the show.
The first Carvey effort was billed as the "Taco Bell Dana Carvey Show"
and future installments were to have the Pizza Hut name as part of a
unique rotating sponsorship. The Executives at ABC seemed to agree,
saying "portions of the premiere episode went too far". We will be
more careful in the future."

I love Dana Carvey, but I thought the skit on Princess Di was
    in very bad taste.

The breast-feeding skit was mentioned in an article I read about
him sometime last week, but I was under the impression that they
    	weren't going to use it.

I guess they changed their minds.

    Re: Tasteless

Like I stated in .0, to me the skit was funny but I felt kinda weird
about it. Maybe extremely uncomfortable would have been a better term.
It was in bad taste though, but I still felt it funny...

The latest promotion I see for the show titles it the "Mugs Rootbeer
    Dana Carvey Show"....

I'll tune in again next week...

I did like the show, although I agree that the breast feeding skit was
    in bad taste.

However, there was one comment in the beginning of that skit that made
me laugh. He was talking about the republican race and he said,
"There's a 90 year old man, a millionare, and Adolph Hitler! Heck,
throw in a bearded lady and I'll pay a quarter to see it!!"

    haha!

439.8Night & DayNETCAD::HERTZBERGHistory: Love it or Leave it!Wed Mar 20 1996 09:4812
Well, I didn't mention anything last week, but I was surprised they
didn't cancel the show after the opener. I had no problem with the
tastelessness... I find the SNL-type comedy is often at its best when
it is most tasteless (when all else fails, hack off a limb and start
the blood spurting). Last week's show just wasn't funny... that was
    the problem to me.

I can't believe last night's show could be so different. Very funny
indeed. Almost everything worked well. The Batman cartoon spoof was a
    riot.

We'll see what next week brings.

I thought the Mug root beer commercials were funnier than
some of the skits ie: The Beatles thing is a bore, the Johnny
Cochran thing is a bore (maybe cause i'm so sick of simpson
    in general.

I like the show, although it isn't that great. My wife thinks
    the entire show stinks.

I only saw the last one (root beer) and thought is was a cross
between of SNL and Dennis Miller...

I found it funny and I too think it will fail because the
" politically" correct network and world we live in will not
let it go on...can't make fun of anything anymore unless you
are on HBO late at night..

Well, this week's show was decent. Not quite the hilarity of the second
show, but it was good overall and a few skits (Ross Perot on Larry King
and especially Grandma the Clown) were brilliant.

Finally saw this show last night, and now I wish I
didn't waste my time doing so. God this show is
bad. I do like Dana Carvey, but something's gotta
change before I'll watch it again.
    Just my $0.02 worth.

Yup, it was a dud last night.

Missed last week's show, so I don't know how that went. This show has
been up and down. Sometimes they hit a perfect chord, though. I do
    like Grandma the Clown.
439.15Who wants to be the sponsor next week?ENGPTR::MCMAHONDEC: ReClaim TheName!Wed Apr 24 1996 13:346
I wonder how much it costs to sponsor this show - I mean, 'Szechuan
Dynasty'(sp)? Looks like any one of a million Chinese restaurants -
how could they afford to sponsor a show on a major network? Or maybe
they're paying the sponsors now. I agree, last night's show was a was
of microwaves but I do think the guy that does Bob Dole does a good
    job.
439.16CLUSTA::MAIEWSKIBos-Mil-Atl Braves W.S. ChampsMon Apr 29 1996 10:514
They probably don't pay much. My guess is that it's little more than a
running gag.

439.17Wonder if it was a gag all alongENGPTR::MCMAHONDEC: ReClaim TheName!Mon Apr 29 1996 14:484
Yeah, that's what I figured when I saw who the sponsor was - but I
remember reading that a few of the early big-name sponsors pulled out
after the first show was aired so I figured that the sponsorship at
least started out as a real thing.

Hey, not a complete bomb last week by any means. In fact two of the
skits (I'm thinking of the Wizard of Oz sendup and the First Ladies as
    dogs) were quite amusing indeed.

ABC pulled the show last night. Show a repeat of "Home Improvement".
