Did he charge a fee for his work, or did he just make the party
promise to re-pay the favor at a later time?
Or am I thinking of "Stingray"?

My recollection is that he charged according to what the client could pay,
and that he was pretty relaxed about even that. I remember in one case a
small boy hired him to find the boy's father, and he charged precisely
half of what the boy had in his pockets (about $.50 I think), and he only
did that because the boy insisted in paying him. They made it very clear
in later shows that money was not a problem (ie, the old Jaguar he drove,
and one time he was in trouble he opened a hidden wall in his apartment
and pushed his way past this massive arsenal to pull out $50K and hand it
to his son as money to be used to get out of town while he handled the
situation: the $50K didn't even dent his hidden stash).
There were no "favors" owed, as I recall.
Good show, and I especially liked his friend Micky Kostmeyer (sp?).

| Being a big Len Deighton fan, I couldn't help but notice some similarities
between the star of the Equalizer and the Bernard Samsom character from so
many of Deighton's books. Is it safe to assume that there's some influence
here?

Ummm, I haven't seen "American Gothic", so I'm pretty sure
that's not the one I was thinking of.

| I, too, am glad to see it back. Loved it 10 years ago, watched it last
night, and found that (unlike a lot of series that I liked once and don't
like now in reruns) I still loved it.
I remember one episode where McCall kept getting calls from some one
having problems with their stereo (Equalizer).
But mostly, it was a top notch dramatic series with good actors and good
stories and Stuart Copeland's music.

Looks like this show took the place of "The Rockford Files" at
7PM out here in the Boston area.
