409.0. "The Single Guy" by VAXCPU::michaud (Jerry Seinfeld) Fri Nov 17 1995 01:27

Well I really just have a question but seeing there is no existing
topic, I'll give the usual quick description of the show.

This show is about a single guy living in a more realistic NYC
apartment than most shows today that are set in NYC (The Honeymooners
is the only other show I can think of that's realistic in this
aspect, and that shows not new :-).

He has some friends, both married couples, that set him up on
dates every now and then. Ernest Borgnine (and no, he's not
dead contrary to popular belief) plays the door/elevator man
in the apt. building that Johnny (the single guy) lives in
who does alot of cooking but in several of the buildings
	tenents apartments.

In any case, now to my question. For some reason I had been under
the impression that Johnny and the married woman whom Johnny is
very close to (Jennine) were brother & sister. However in this
last episode we meet Jennine's older sister, and then without giving
anything away, it's clear Johnny & Jennine are not related.

So what is Johnny & Jennine's relationship? Were they former
boyfriend/girlfriend and/or just close friends from childhood?

Yeah, they've known each other since childhood. Johnny keeps referring
to her as his best friend.

> He is blonde on my Tv too!

You kids must all have cheaply made TV's :-)

The other reason I say he has red hair is that in at least one
episode at least one of the other characters refered to his hair
as "red" (maybe the actor has "blonde" hair, but the character
is supposed to have "red" hair :-)).

Just to make sure, we are talking about the skinny guy with the
curly hair (and a recessed hairline I believe) that is a recording
studio tech.? (vs. Jon himself, or Jeanenne's husband)

This show is ok. It has it's moments.

I find it the weakest of the 4 NBC comedies on Monday night and sometimes
I switch over and watch "This old house" on PBS or "I Dream of Genie" on
Nick at Night but sometimes I make it through.

Must be some shuffle coming along. They've been plugging a new comedy
called something like "Boston Common" for the NBC lineup. It's not clear if
this will replace one of those shows, bump one of those to another night,
or move to another night itself.

doesn't receive this show until Thursday.

I was going to say the same thing, but my guess is George
got confused because last Monday they had the night of
a thousand laughs where they had six (6) NBC sitcoms
running back to back from 8-11pm (though they were all
	reruns except for one show).
409.14CLUSTA::MAIEWSKIBos-Mil-Atl Braves W.S. ChampsWed Mar 13 1996 15:276
Maybe I was thinking about Monday night football.

Anyway, of the Thursday comedies it's the weakest bit it's still ok. The
other three are really good.

So, does anyone besides me recognize the actress who plays
    	Charlie McCarthy?

Hint: she was the main character in a horror movie about 6-7
    	years ago.

FYI, this show returns (and in it's regular timeslot) this week
with a new episode (also new episode of Friends, with Marlo Thomas
guesting again, and a new hour-long Seinfeld, which also eats into CITC
which hence won't be on this week).

Plus Jon Silverman was supposed to be on the Tonight Show last week
but got bumped (Newt Gingrich too much time with his animals), but
after Leno apologied, Leno did mention that TSG has been renewed
	for next season.

Hurray....its back this week....although I was starting to really
get into Boston Common I REALLY missed the Single Guy...
I am glad its coming back.....(Does anyone know whats gonna happen
to Boston Common?) I'd rather see the Single Guy anyhow....Can't
    wait til thursday !!
409.21Some characters will disappear, new characters to replace them ...VAXCPU::michaudAaron SpellingMon Jul 22 1996 20:2616
I just read in the newspaper today that had several quotes from
Warren Littlefield (of NBC). It seems TSG is not one of their
stronger shows, but it will be back this Fall. However like
for some other shows that NBC has stolen from other networks for
the new season, the show is being re-vamped a bit .....

The major change is that as Warren put it, they are getting rid
of the "boring couple". Ie. the couple with the baby (ie. the
character who is a childhood friend of the main character). They
will be written out of the story somehow. And they are introducing
some new friends or something and alot of activity will take place
around some local hangout (possibly a pizza place). Sounds like
they may try to make it similiar to Friends "Central Perk"?

In any case, NBC has already gotton rid of the boring couple as
far as the Web page goes for TSG ......
409.22DREGS::BLICKSTEINThe moment is a masterpieceWed Jul 24 1996 10:5110
The husband in the "boring couple" was indeed a "bore", but I thought
the wife (Janine I think is the character's name) was a great
    character.

And I'd be embarrassed to tell you how long it took for me to realize
that the same actress played the lesbian partner of Ross's ex-wife on
friends. I took me forever to notice that even though the shows
    are back-to-back. Totally different character/look.

409.23BUSY::SLABOUNTYWhose Line Is It Anyway?Wed Jul 24 1996 13:219

    	Her name is Jessica Hecht.

And although I knew she was on both shows, she showed up rather
infrequently on "Friends" so you might not have really paid her
too much attention when you did see her.

And I'll miss her, because I like her character.

409.24Boston Common was better. So was dead air...SWAM1::STERN_TOTom Stern -- Have TK, will travel!Thu Aug 01 1996 17:236
It's a start. Now all they need to do in order to improve the show is
    get rid of:

the other couple (or at least him),
    	Ernest Borgnine
    	Jonathon Silverman
409.25CLUSTA::MAIEWSKIBos-Mil-Atl Braves W.S. ChampsFri Aug 02 1996 09:236
I'd get rid of everyone but Ernest Borgnine, add Tim Conway, move the
characters to the South Pacific and have them making a living off an old PT
boat converted into a fishing boat while running various scams on the side.
