| I would have to guess...
Mid-60's I would think. I remember watching The Green One as far back
as 1967.

I think that Kermit was created for Sesame Street(I'm not sure, but that was the
first place I saw him. Maybe if you look up when that show first aired, you'd
have the approximate birthday of Kermit.
Today's show was brought to you by the letter "K"

| I think Kermit was "born" way before Sesame St. I saw an old Ed
Sullivan retrospective, and one of the clips was of Kermit singing
"Glow Worm." The clip was from the early/mid 60's; definately before
Sesame St first appeared.

Like .2, I thought that Kermit was 'born' with Sesame St.
Recently my wife brought out an old apron she'd had as a child
for our little girl to use when painting. It featured a huge
picture of Kermit and along the bottom " Jim Henson Inc, 1956".
I was really surprised that Kermit was that old and wondered if
anyone had any Muppet memories from that far back.

321.5 | Variety show in the 50's | GRANPA::JBOBB | Janet Bobb dtn:339-5755 | Tue Dec 13 1994 07:34 | 15 |
| PBS ran a special on Jim Hensen a few weeks ago. From what I remember,
Kermit and such were on TV in the 50's in a weekly variety show....I'm
blanking right now, but it was something like Jimmy Dean or Bob Evans
(I remember that because it's someone whose name now appears on a
sausage product...). They showed a few clips from the series with a
Kermit and Fozzie like character (don't know if they had those names).
Apparently this is where Henson learned a lot about comedy, because the
show had some of the "great" comedy writers of the time working on it.
There was also one or two other things before Sesame Street.
If interested, I can get more details when I go home - either from the
tape of the special or from a book on Henson we have.

Saw a book in the Worcester Library called "Of Muppets and Men"
1st page says that Kermit was created in 1956 while Henson was still
in college and doing a local tv show called "Sam & Friends" with his
wife.
Like -.1 says he spent about 6 years working on the Jimmy Dean show.
Ironically, it was Rolf the dog, and not kermit that landed Henson
his big break.
If you're any kind of a muppet fan this is a good book. Shows how
the muppets were/are made, what the sets look like, how the
characters are worked. Also shows a chronology of the Muppet Show.
