267.1 | New Studio presents some interesting options | TOOK::DELBALSO | I (spade) my (dog face) | Thu Jun 23 1994 13:04 | 13 |
| Any opinions on the new "window on the world" studio?
I'm looking forward to the shows this winter during some of the blizzards.
Oughta be kinda neat to see the storm swirling in Manhattan (or just a
whiteout) behind the desk.
I wonder if they intend to continue to keep a security detail patrolling
the outside area even after the novelty wears off. I have visions of some
weirdo/sicko pulling something outside the window in the middle of a show.

PS. I thought the appearance this AM by the "CATS" cast was neat.

| I watched it yesterday morning...one of the technicians was setting up
outside for a piece and fell somehow injuring himself so they had to
skip the piece. Hopefully he will be OK - he was taken to the hospital
becasue they thought he was electrocuted...Katie said he was talking
immediately after, so he was alive. Ya have to wonder if this outside
stuff wouldn't be a little more difficult to control. I can imagine a
streaker or someone going by with suggestive signage.
They also did a piece where they showed how the studio was set up and
how it all functioned (quick piece as filler)...there is a wall that
will come up between the outside world and the anchors during
"sensitive" subjects/guests. I'd like to pass by there some morning
just for the fun of it.

| I was one of the people in the window the 1st time around. Back around the
1958-1960 time frame when I was 10-12 years we went to New York and stood
outside watching Dave Garaway, Frank Blair and Jack LaScholly (sp?). As I
recall, there was no sound outside so you couldn't tell what was going on. It
was fun, the people back home saw us on TV which was a really big deal back
then.
I was a regular watcher up to about the time that Tom Brokaw left and Bryant
Gumble took his place. It wasn't so much the anchors, it was more the material.
Due to the success of Good Morning America on ABC, they switch to doing mostly
fluff for most of the show. Their demographics told them that most working
people were out the door by 7:30 so after that the material was geared to the
daytime audience.
There really is no replacement for the old show so now I just sit and read
the paper in the morning.
There have been many people over the years who have worked on the TODAY
show. Here are some, feel free to correct the spelling and add more names to
the list. They are grouped more or less on who worked together. Dates are
not exact (and may in fact be completely wrong).

| Today's news is done by MATT LAUER - I really like him. I don't like
Gumbell only because he seems so snobby.
I haven't watched it enough to know about Katie.

I love the today show very much! I love the new set, I love
looking outside at the people, and as someone mentioned it will
be great to see the changes in the weather.
I love katie and I love Bryant..Matt is okay.
I like the Today show better because to me it seems more news
with a little fluff .. GMA seem too much fluff for me. If I
want fluff I'll watch ET.

| I'm not a regular watcher of the show (too rushed in the morning to turn it
on) but I have caught some of the regulars on Letterman. That Katie Couric
sure is PERKY! (or was that Mary Hart??)
I wonder, have they had any trouble with people holding up rude signs??

| re: rude signs
I haven't seen anything "socially rude" but I've been pleased to note for
the past month or so that they haven't made any attempts to "censor" the
labor-types who've been holding "NBC unfair to Unions"-type signs. This
was one of the things I had originally wondered about wrt their "level
of control". Nice to see they're willing to let the viewers make their
own judgements rather than attempting to stack the deck.
Actually, when you consider the fact that they've got multiple camera angles
on that corner of the studio, it's probably a simple matter to avoid anything
rude being displayed, other than a "Flash".
