222.0. "The Critic, animated comedy (ABC Wed 8:30)" by APLVEW::DEBRIAE () Sat Jan 29 1994 03:58

    	Did anyone see this new show on ABC, Wednesdays at 8:30? It's an
    	animated comedy show similar to "The Simpson's." I heard a review
    	of it on NPR during the drive home and the reviewer liked it quite
    	a bit. Unfortunately he didn't mention the time-slot so I only
    	caught the last 15 minutes of it by chance.

    	I also thought the show was quite good, in that it caught me
    	off-guard several times and made me laugh. I felt the show has a
    	lot of material and a lot of potential. Two of the writers are from
    	the "Simpson's" team and that is evident from the start as the show
    	has much of the same off-beat and biting humor that I enjoy in the
    	Simpsons. I guess network TV got fed-up making their own animation
    	comedy flops (like fish police was it?) that they figured they'd
    	join them since they couldn't beat them, and stole the Simpson
    	writers.

    	At any rate, the show was quite good for a pilot. The animated
    	version of the ex-SNL Luvet(?) character didn't grate on me as much
    	as the real-life version does, in fact he makes a decent animation
    	character. And I _loved_ the Gene Shallot(sp) cameo! :-)

    We changed the channel after the critic leered at someone's cleavage.
    The writing was abysmal, I don't care for the animation (there seemed
    to be enough frames per second; I just don't like the drawing), and
    I've felt for a long time that Jon Lovitz is a one-trick pony (the
    Thespian, which killed me originally, but he never plays anything
    else!).

      The writing was funny , provided that you got the jokes .

     The Critic spoofed TV shows , movies , stereotypes and had
    some wry observations . The style of drawing wasn't the best
    but it wasn't bad . The critic leered at someones cleavage and we
    changed the channel .... Must do alot of channel changing nowadays .
    Just because a show is animated doesn't always mean that it's
    intended for children . I liked the show . especially the spoof
    of Seinfeld . Cool show . Jon Lovitz role in the Critic was nothing
     like the Thespian ... One trick pony ??? Nahh...Stick to green
    acre's or Hee-Haw if thats your thing .

    So take off the white gloves and tell us what you really think :-)
222.4show for humor more than animation valueAPLVEW::DEBRIAEWed Feb 02 1994 06:546

    	Hmmm, I missed this cleavage scene that got some upset. Either it
    	happened in the first half I missed or I was channel surfing too.
    	I'll wait to tomorrow's show to see if my first impressions stay...

    Erik,

    I'd like to hear your impression of the 2d show. I watched the first,
    and thought it was fair, a few good in-jokes/parodies.

    The second episode was marginal at best. If this show is trying to
    be a "character" show, they need to have better writers. Unlike
    "The Simpsons" which operates on so many levels, this show is flat.

    I don't think I'll be tuning in again, just for the occasional
    movie reference (The Simpsons does it better anyway, without
    being so obvious). And yes, this is from the same producers
    as The Simpsons, but obviously not the same writers.

222.6don't think I'll see the next one eitherAPLVEW::DEBRIAEWed Feb 09 1994 05:089
    	Ditto for everything you said Richard.

	The second show was marginal, flat, and in need of better writing.
    	I thought the NPR critic said two of the writers were stolen from
    	the Simpsons. If that's true, they certainly weren't the better
    	ones...

      After the first pilot the series has run flat , I'll watch once more
      sometimes shows need a chance to grow .
