| GOOD IDEA! You know sometimes you think about writing and never do. I
think I might drop her a note.
Last year I read an autobiography on her, and when I was through I
was overwhelmed with appreciation for the wonderful person she has
turned out to be considering what she has gone through. it makes you
think about people who are always in trouble and the excuse being
used all the time is "well I came from a "dysfunctional" family, so
this is why I did what I did."
I am so happy for her and her success. She definately deserves all the
best.

| I've watched Oprah on occasion and in general I think her show is pretty
good. Patty likes the daytime shows so we often tape them and play them back
after work.
As with Donahuh, her topics seemed to be slanted a bit too heavily toward
problems with unusual human romantic relationships and health problems but
that's obviously in high demand and she does a good job of covering those
issues.
My biggest complaint with Oprah is that she will often let the more aggressive
of her guests dominate a conversation, particularly if they have a point of
view that seems to be shared by her audience.
For example, she might have the three members of a love triangle on with the
wife complaining about her husband and mistress or a victim of a crime on with
the perpetrator. When that happens you'll often see the more sympathetic party
given 10 minutes or so to spell out their gripe in detail, then when the less
sympathetic party tries to respond they will be interrupted and cut off by the
angry party making it difficult for them to make their point.
Where Donahuh will control the conversation and make sure everyone has an
equal shot at making their point, Oprah will often just sit back and let them
slug it out, resulting in more heat and less light being shed on the subject.
Also, the socially conservative nature of her audiences often gets to me with
women jumping up and all but calling for a mistress or lady of the evening to
be drawn and quartered while the rest of the audience thunders their approval
and when I start to complain about it at length, Patty often drives me from the
room wondering aloud why I can't shut up and watch the show.
But where Oprah lacks a little in fairness, she more than makes up for it in
personality, wit, and her obvious compassion toward just about everyone. It's
definitely one of the better talk shows and probably the 2nd best of it's kind
after Donahuh.

| I wrote this in the PROGRESS note as well. I don't know if
anyone is interested, but on OPRAH today at 5pm, she is going to
talk about her weight problems, progress, and read certain areas
of her diary regarding her weight problems.
Should be good.

| I watched this show and thought it was really touching.....it must've
very difficult to be so open and public with such *real* personal
struggles. I thought her honesty was probably quite an inspiriation to
others struggling with the same problem.

177.8 | Anyone watch 2/22?? | DELNI::DISMUKE | | Tue Mar 01 1994 01:30 | 13 |
| Can anyone help...last week Oprah did a show based on family finance.
She did an experiment with several families asking them back in
November to participate in the suggestions given in the book they were
talking about. I only caught pieces of the show (I think it was on
Tuesday) and never caught the name of the book. At one point they did
say "Money doesn't grow on trees" - the author was a woman (if that was
the author on the panel, I mean). I don't think they even gave her
name during the time I watched. I have a book of a similar title, but
it was written by a man in collaboration with Sam Walton, so I don't
think that was it.

| I saw the show and I am not sure who the author was but I do know that
the name of the book was "Money doesn't grow on trees." I too am
interested in getting this book. I am sure my family could benefit
from it. The author is a woman I know that much. It was a good show.
My kids watched it too and they liked the idea of using the jars and
working for money. I liked the idea of, no work no money. Also they
would have to do a GOOD job in order to get paid. I used to give my
kids an allowance but they never did the job to my satisfaction. They
still do the work but I don't pay them.
