174.0. "Grace Under Fire" by SWAM1::BALDWIN_LE (Leon Baldwin DTN 520-6578 Los Angeles) Fri Oct 01 1993 10:38

Among the sitcom look and sound alikes, Grace Under Fire
stands out. I think she is a Winner.

I enjoyed it, certainly enough to give it a second viewing.

Brett Butler, the star, is being given quite a build-up. The
TV Guide article about her touts her as "the next Roseanne"
(both in popularity and industry power).

Having the main character be a victim of wife battering (from her
ex, just like Butler) certainly adds a dose of reality.

I thought this show was good - certainly enough to warrent a second
look. I liked the delivery style of "grace". She had a few interesting
lines when at the job and the boss was going through a "valuing
    differences" talk.

the show could prove to be a keeper.

Brett Butler attended the same high school (Wheeler High in Marietta, Ga)
as I did but after I'd graduated. My younger sister was in her class though
and although she didn't know her all that well she has some stories about
her.

174.6Has it been cancelled or what ? OCTAVE::VIGNEAULTJava-ManSat Mar 26 1994 00:278

Anyone know what's up with this show ? According to TV guide, it
goes on hiatus and there's a new show taking it's time slot. I
really like the show, and it's gotten a lot of good reviews but
usually when I notice a show go on hiatus, it doesn't tend to
return. Is this show gone for good ?

Something that my husband said...Maybe the quake messed up the set
enough that they had to stop taping for awhile and we are just now
finishing up the shows that were already filmed. Seems alot of shows
are popping re-runs in the middle of the season or going on hiatus.

    that.

    re: .6, .7, .8

I think you're reading too much into the hiatus. Grace is the
most-watched new show of the season, but like most other shows, they
produce only 23 episodes per season. Almost every show on the air
today shows reruns, on and off, throughout the season. And, the
networks often put a successful show on hiatus to try to launch new
hits by giving them a can't-lose time slot, like the one after Home
Improvement. (Coach seems to go on hiatus every summer.)

I doubt the hiatus has anything to do with the earthquake. This caused
delays of one to two weeks - tops - on even the most damaged sets.

Judging by the ratings, and the overall feel of the show, I think you
can count on Grace being back later this spring, and next season, and
    the season after that, and...

    My thoughts...

Didn't she or her show win an award this year? I think I remeber
seeing a snippet like - thanks for staying up lateto watch us - or
    something..

I rarely catch her show - and personally - I don't care for it but she
does seem to have plenty of fans.

(after the credits) she said she was going to be tied up for awhile and
would be back in a month or so....(she was tied up btw :')

it is a good show and it should be back with out a doubt !

So I'm a little slow, but I just watched this for the first time last
night and I loved it!! I was laughing out loud left and right. I'll
definitely continue to watch this one.

I thought the best line was "No. A conversation is where two people
talk to each other face to face. *This* is visiting hour at Sing

I never can remember the lines after the show, but I do remember
laughing quite a bit during the shows. I like this show alot and this
past week, even my husband was watching and laughing.

I also like the serious topics they deal with - latchkey kids,
unsympathic boss, unable to get pregnant - without getting too serious.

A few comments from the last few episodes - I don't think I'd leave 10
and 7 yr. olds alone, but boy it does sure show the problem that many
people have to face. I did like that Wade was able to "fill the cup" at
the fertility clinic by watching the StageCoach vidio and not the
    "bambi does dallas" type.

    Thumbs up for this show.

Just remembered one of the lines - I think it was from 2 weeks ago,
when the new female worker was brought onto the crew and objected to
    the guys' language/manner.

Grace talking to new female worker.... "Most of the guys think harass
    (said slowly) is two words"

Was going through the tape of the show from 2 weeks ago (new female
crew member added to the work group).

There were several lines in this one that were hilarious.... imho

Nadine comes over to Grace's to "forage" for food. Looking at Grace's
shelves.... "Gees Grace, you must have 19 cans of Cream of Mushroom
    soup!"
Grace: "Sometimes things struggle in the skillet and mushroom soup
    subdues thems"

Grace talking to Dougie (one of the guys in the work group at the
plant) after he talks about getting his mother's thigh-master rebuilt
(because mom likes the smell of the old one...)
Grace: "dougie, have you ever read anything by sigmund freud?"
    Dougie: "No"
    Grace: "Don't"

Grace explaining to new female worker how she handles some of the
    crude/sexist comments that guys make...
Grace: "Pretend it's an anthropological expedition, Jane Goddell, diane
Fosse and the guys are the Gorillas in the Mist"

Grace and Nadine talking in Grace's house about Nadine's frustration on
    not being pregnant....
Nadine: "We've been trying for 6 months and we're still not pregnant"
Grace: "WE... will never get pregnant. Women get pregnant, when I see a
man in silver stirrups with his knees around his ears, panting like a
tired pony then WE will get pregant".

Grace helping one of the guys (don't remember his name) at the plant do
    a crossword puzzle...
Guy: "What's 4 letters long, second letter is I,
last letter is S and women's are bigger than men's"
    Grace: "Hips"
    Guy: "...got an eraser?"
Grace: "and what's 22 down, president before Roosevelt.... Herbert
Hooters? (not a typo, spelled with a T)
Guy: "Hey, I do this for relaxation"

anyway - just a few. Does it seem like there are a lot more one-liners
this season - or are they just funnier?
