171.0. "Combat!" by TRADE::MORE (Are You Being Served?) Sat Sep 25 1993 03:43

Anyone out there remember the World War II series 'Combat!'
starring Rick Jason and Vic Morrow. I have started watching this
again on channel 68 at 10:00 p.m. and find I still enjoy it!

Other then the tragic end to Vic Morrow, I have often wondered
what happened to the rest of 'the squad', Lt Handly, Caje, Little
John, Kirby (with his trusty B.A.R.), and Doc?

They came back from the war, got married to a home town girl, took jobs in a
factory, moved into track houses, started raising families and chasing the
American dream. They had so many kids that it was termed a "baby boom". In
fact, later those kids would be called "baby boomers".

In their spare time they hung out at the American Leagon or the VFW and were
a little ruffled 10 years later when all those younger Korean war vets came
home and joined up but remembering how they had upset the WWI vets they all got
along and every year they marched together in the Memorial day Parade.

Then 15 years later when their kids all started smoking dope, growing their
hair long, and refused to fight in Vietnam they tried to remind them how they
had all "fought in the big one" and how every young man had a duty to fight for
his country but all they got back were commie inspired lectures about the
Military Industrial complex and baby killers.

Just when it seemed their entire dream would die, their kids all started
wearing leisure suits and some of them actually moved out of those hippie
communes and got respectable jobs. And when the grand kids showed up some how
all of that nonsense from a few years ago just didn't seem all that important.

During the '80s it looked like the dream really would come true but as the
decade drew to a close they weren't so sure. But by then they had come to
realize that what goes around comes around and what with the house paid off,
retirement looking like a real possibility, and the grand kids coming over
on weekends, life was ok.

Although things still look pretty good in the 90's, it seems more difficult
to just get up and get around. Old friends seem to be passing away and it seems
that new achs and pains pop up faster than the old ones go away. Somehow
hospitals seem more familiar then they ever did before and there's always some
doctor that wants to poke or prod you someplace new. But still these things
pass and with fall coming everyone will be coming around for Thanksgiving and
the holidays should be a lot of fun.

As for the war, that seems like ancient history. There's a whole new bunch of
kids marching in the Memorial day parade these days but no matter, the few WWII
vets that are left get to ride in the limo and sit in the front row during the
ceremony. Somehow even the cemetery doesn't look all that foreboding. When you
come to think of it, it's nothing more than a big green field with a bunch of
marble stones. Some things just aren't worth making a fuss over.

    Re -1

OK, since you seem to have all the answers, what happened to the ACTORS
who played 'the squad', Lt Handly, Caje, Little John, Kirby (with his
trusty B.A.R.), and Doc? We all know what happened to Vic Morrow. The
    Twilight Zone got him.

When did I ever say I had all the answers? You asked what happened to the
characters so I wrote a proposal for a script.

I have no idea what happened to the actors.

I caught a real young Vic Morrow in "The Blackboard Jungle" yesterday.

What a great performance! I hated his character!

In my original note .0, I was refering to the actors, fondly recalling
them by thier character names, wondering what happened to them after
the show ended. 171.2 picked up on that aswell and I still am
interested in what happended to them, 'the actors'.

George, Calm down, relax! I was mearly yanking your chain. Your
reply was well done. Really! The only reason I phrased my reply the way
I did is because I knew the base noter wanted to know about the actors
and not the characters and since your proposal has a lot of truth to it
I thought I'd ask (although in the wrong way) if you knew what happened
    to the actors.

    Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Don't know about the other actors. It often seems to be the case that one
or two actors from a popular series go on while others seem to fade away. I've
often heard of how Shatner and Nemahoy (sp?) from the original Star Trek never
have problems getting jobs but the pickings are really slim for the others.
At least they have the conventions and for a while they had the Star Trek
movies.
