Note 27.0 Whatever happened to.....? 17 replies

I'd like to start off a new topic with something I think can be
interesting. I'd like to call it..."Whatever happened to...."
and in this topic folks can ask about favorite folks from tv shows past
and see if anyone out there in notesland has read or anything about
    that person in question.

For instance, I'd like to know what happened to the following folks:

The actor that played Sandy Ricks in Flipper (His real name escapes me
    at the moment)

Or the kid that played Marc McCain from the Rifleman?

Or Randolph Mantooth from the show Emergency?

Or what about David Soul and Paul-Michael Glaser from Starsky and
Hutch? (I know Paul-Michael Glaser (Starsky) lost a child and I think
his wife to AIDS) but is he still directing films?

Those are just to name a few.

Have these folks done any acting recently? Or have they become orange
growers? or pirates? or something even more obscure?

    Inquiring minds want to know........

I think the kid that played Mark McCain has been inactive. Except in a
couple of specials about westerns and the like

Randolph Mantooth was on LOVING for a while. I'm not sure if he is
    still.

David Soul does TV movies once in a while. He has had trouble with the
courts, since he likes to beat up on girlfriends, so he may be finding
it hard to find a job.

Paul Michael Glaser has lost one child to AIDS, and his wife and other
child have AIDS. Well, actually, I'm not sure if the both have AIDS or
if they are HIV+. His wife, whose name I am ashamed to admit I forget,
started the Pediatric AIDS Foundation. She spoke at the Democratic
    National Convention.

    That's all I can remember.

Thanks for letting me know about the book, I'll look into this weekend.

That series is *OLD* .. nobody in here would possibly admit to
remembering it.. hehe. Actually, I remember it - it was a top-line
program back when it was made in the late '50s. I think they would have
a problem remaking that series because helicopters have grown
boring-looking .. not like the li'l Bell Goldfish Bowl jobbies of the
late '50s. There's one parked at the airport near here, actually. I
should think that the air worthiness bill for one of those li'l
darlings would be prohibitive these days.

re .5. When you ask about Skippy, were you referring to a tv show, or
the character from Family Matters? (I think that' the name of hte old
Michael J. Fox show.) The person who played Skippy has been on Evening
at the Improv as a stand-up comedian -- and he's funny.

    Ginny,

Yes.. you're referring to a series here which was entitled "Skippy,
the Bush Kangaroo". It was produced out of Sydney about 20 years ago
and found its way onto TV sets the world over. It's being rejuvinated
and is in production right now, incidentally.

(I won't say anymore except that the title of the show ought really to
be amended to take account of a certain USA use of one of the words
therein.. all of us Aussies seem to get caught out by dropping that
word in the company of Americans.. simply because our use of it is
    different.)

    tom,

Quite correct. Phyllis Coates played "Lois Lane" in the early TV
shows but left the series for another part. As at the 8th edition of
Richard Lamparski's "Whatever Became Of?", Ms Coates was married to a
physician and was alive and well in Big Sur, California.

As to Noel Neill, she retired in 1957 when the TV series ended. She
was married at the time and is now divorced and living in Santa Monica
    Canyon.

I was recently reading a fascinating account of George Reeves in
"Hollywood's Unsolved Mysteries" by John Austin. He starred as
"Superman" in all 104 episodes, whereupon he shot and killed himself on
    16-JUN-1959.

I am trying to place a show from ...mumble... years ago. It was about a
modern family shucked into another deminsion/world. This demision/world was
very strict and very closley controled by someone.

The show I remember the best is about the brother and sister
starting a rock band when most of the popular music was clasical.
The kids in this place realy liked the STONES and BEATLES music.

In one act the manager is asking how the kids wright all this great
music and how they can be sure it will all be a hit. The sister starts
to say they are all proven hits but the brother cuts her off.

At the end of the show the band folds due the the microscope it
places the family under and they can not stand the examination as
it will expose them as being from somewhere else.

A trivial thought that I cannot make go away, so might as well put
    here...

About a year ago an actress named, I think, Anita Morris, appeared on a
couple of evening-soap type dramas, as an over-the-top evil beast, of
the Joan Collins school. She made the late-night talk show rounds. She
was on Letterman and the Tonight show. Was remarkable for being in
rather incredibly good shape for a fifty-ish person, having been a
dancer. Also red hair, quite "vivacious" overall. Maybe from Texas.

Anyway, I saw a note in a TV listing recently, "starring the late Anita
Morris". If it's the same actress, then she must have died suddenly and
recently. And not, if appearances were any indication, the result of an
    extended illness.

    Anybody heard of her?

27.22Greg Morris deadTNPUBS::NAZZAROZydeco!Wed Aug 28 1996 14:5227
I'm sad to report that Greg Morris, Barney on Mission: Impossible, died
yesterday at age 61. Here is the story, taken without permission from
    the Globe:

LAS VEGAS - Actor Greg Morris, who played technical wizard Barney
Collier in the "Mission: Impossible" television series, was found dead
at home yesterday. He was 61.

The cause of his death was not immediately known. Mr. Morris had
battled brain cancer the past few years, but had told the Las Vegas
Review-Journal in May that he was cancer-free.

Mr. Morris was one of the first black actors to star in a hit series
during the 1960s, playing the quiet, efficient electronics expert on
the show that ran from 1966 to 1973. "My seven years on that show were
the most fun years of my career," he recalled.

But he walked out of the new movie version after only 40 minutes.
"It's an abomination," he said of the Tom Cruise film, which did not
feature any of the series' cast.

Born in Cleveland, Mr. Morris came to Hollywood in the early 1960s
after some minor stage experience in Seattle. He had guest roles on
series including "Dr. Kildare,' "The Dick Van Dyke Show," and "The
Twilight Zone" before being cast on "Mission: Impossible."

27.23Mr. Peters, I presume?ODIXIE::LOWERWhat fools these mortals be!Thu Aug 29 1996 02:0518
    Sad, indeed.

Morris's spot on "The Dick Van Dyke Show" remains as one of my all-time
    favorite episodes of any sitcom.

For those who may not know or remember, the show was about Rob thinking
that the newborn Richie had been switched at the hospital. Cutting to
the punchline, Rob calls the other couple (the Peters, if memory
serves) and gets them to come over. Morris was Mr. Peters. The scene
with him and his "wife" walking through the door is still considered
an all-time classic. Dealing with racial tension back then was nearly
unheard of and "The Dick Van Dyke Show" was one of the few with guts
    enough to tackle it.

    Greg will be sorely missed.
