That's tomorrow, isn't >> it?? I don't know if this will mess anything up or not, but I thought >> that I'd point it out The reason being, Our host node SNOC02 is located in Australia. This may cause some confusion but I hope its the worst of our problems :^) No really - it may require clearer questions or comments - like where I said last nights's episode of Murphy Brown etc. but I don't think it will be too much of a problem. Joyce ================================================================================ Note 3.2 Conference Related Discussions 2 of 16 MILPND::J_TOMAO "PracticeRandomActsOfKindness&Beaut" 14 lines 21-JAN-1993 06:28 -< Form feed = Ctrl F >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please remember when posting comments, many folks tape shows and don't get to them right away so use the form feed and let folks know before they hit return that a 'spoiler' comment is coming up. To use the form feed hold the Ctrl button down then hit the "L" key. If done properly you will see 2 little "f"s appear which will indicate the return key is needed to read the rest of the text. I hope every one does their part so I'm not using the 'set hidden' powers bestowed upon me. :^) Thank you for your support, Joyce Co-mod ================================================================================ Note 3.3 Conference Related Discussions 3 of 16 TOLKIN::HOWARD "Barbara" 6 lines 11-FEB-1993 23:08 -< Helping a friend >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have a friend who can't get into this note she says it's remote unknown. Is there anything she may be doing wrong?? her node is SCOMAN::SHEEHAN. She works third shift. Do you think you can help her with this?? Thanks, Barbara ================================================================================ Note 3.4 Conference Related Discussions 4 of 16 HELIX::MAIEWSKI 15 lines 12-FEB-1993 01:14 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I just checked with NCP and node SCOMAN seems to have node SNOC02 defined correctly. If you go into ncp on any node and type NCP> tell scoman show node snoc02 ch you will see that it is defined as: Remote node = 59.460 (SNOC02) Have her check to see that she has the name SNOC02 spelled properly. It should be "S" "N" letter "O" "C" number zero "2" I'll bet anything that she has either the "O" or "0" confused. George ================================================================================ Note 3.5 Conference Related Discussions 5 of 16 MILPND::J_TOMAO "PracticeRandomActsOfKindness&Beaut" 21 lines 12-FEB-1993 06:03 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- George thanks for answering that last one. TV_CHATTER is due for some 'house cleaning'. Tomorrow afternoon (Friday p.m. from where I sit at the Mill) Don and I will be cleaning up and deleting conference. I need to ask the members a few favors: 1) Please don't take it personal if your note is deleted, we are just trying to keep the block space the file uses down as low as possible. 2) Please (oh please) bare with me - This will be my first shot at cleaning a conference and Don will be patiently walking me through it - errors may occur and I'll keep you posted if I really blow it :^} 3) Keep in mind when we started this file we said you can discuss anything within reason but we never said we would keep the notes forever. Wish me luck tomorrow Joyce (co-mod) ================================================================================ Note 3.6 Conference Related Discussions 6 of 16 DECWET::METZGER "Zeros and Ones...." 7 lines 12-FEB-1993 09:23 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How about chopping out the soap opera notes? Isn't there an entire conference already designated for soaps? Forgive the suggestion if I'm mistaken... John ================================================================================ Note 3.7 Conference Related Discussions 7 of 16 ELMAGO::BENBACA "Cowboys! 1992/93 World Champions!" 31 lines 12-FEB-1993 14:02 -< My $0.02 >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The IOALOT::SOAPS conference was trashed years ago (1989). There is no reason to chopping the soap notes as they are discussed much the same way as any other TV program is. I knew coming in that cleaning up was probably going to happen on a regular basis and I am all for it. It makes no sense keeping these notes for long periods anyway. The ::Friends conference does this with no problems. I can't figure out the thinking behind chopping out soap opera notes anyway. They aren't any different than prime time stuff except for that they are continued on a daily basis instead of a weekly basis. Just what is it about soaps that folks take issue with. The only thing I can figure is the fact that there are so many of them. There only called soaps because of the advertising that made them popular years ago. Other than that they are no different than 90210, Life goes on, or any of the other shows on the tube. Soaps have the advantage of never ending where the others have a "season" to comply with, and half the year you end up having to watch reruns. If you look at the replies in the four or 5 soap topics you can see that there are not that many replies. Are these topics really taking up that much space?. I say leave the soap topics in. Of course the final decision is up to the Mods. I'll stand by whatever that decision is. Reply .6 You are forgiven :^) By the way, good luck Joyce! 99 < \_/ Ben ================================================================================ Note 3.8 Conference Related Discussions 8 of 16 TOLKIN::HOWARD "Barbara" 11 lines 12-FEB-1993 20:14 -< Please don't start constraining TV_Chatter >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In addition to not chopping out the notes for soaps. The ones, JUST put in here last week are only for the CBS shows, which don't have notes conferances of there own. ABC and NBC soaps do. This was why I asked the moderators, off line, if we could discuss these here, before I entered the topics. This was a problem in the old conferance too, this was why I thought this conferance was created, so there would be as many constraints as in the old file. Which BTW this one was created as an alternative to, not as a replacement for. Eventhough EOT::TV was lost reccently. Thanks for listening. Barbara ================================================================================ Note 3.9 Conference Related Discussions 9 of 16 MILPND::J_TOMAO "PracticeRandomActsOfKindness&Beaut" 10 lines 13-FEB-1993 01:04 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RE: .6 John even though a note string may already have a conference of its own doesn't mean it should be deleted from here. Some folks can't or won't keep up with a high traffic conference and just may like the summaries or little blimps on subjects, so thats one of the reasons we'll keep the 'soaps' around. Don, I think you have to compress the file after deleting the replies or it won't shrink a single block. I'm sure there is a .com procedure around somewhere with the magic shrinking commands. I had it yeas ago but now I only do VMS for note reading and mail reading... John ================================================================================ Note 3.12 Conference Related Discussions 12 of 16 SNOC02::SALES_NOTES "Alan Whicker's Stand-In" 21 lines 14-FEB-1993 06:05 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Re .11 John, >Don, I think you have to compress the file after deleting the replies or it >won't shrink a single block. I'm sure there is a .com procedure around somewhere >with the magic shrinking commands. I had it yeas ago but now I only do VMS for >note reading and mail reading... Yes.. you're right. We've deleted the replies and now comes the time to reduce/compress the amount of disk. Being as Joyce and I are a democratic duo, I had Joyce delete the replies, whereupon I would run the compression. OK.. that's what we did .. but the compress run won't work because it keeps telling me that the input file is locked by another user. Could it be that whosoever deleteth the notes HAS to be the one who also runs the compression/reduction?? Could it be that whosoever deleteth the notes HAS to be > the one who also runs the compression/reduction?? It sounds like the conference file is being accessed by a process - maybe you need to shut down the NOTES server? (just a guess) - Dave ================================================================================ Note 3.14 Conference Related Discussions 14 of 16 MEOC02::CASEY "VAXphone MEO78B::CASEY, DTN 739 9414" 6 lines 16-FEB-1993 06:01 -< Shut down the Notes server??? >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Re .13 Ermm.. could I get a simple King James edition of that?? Don *8-) ================================================================================ Note 3.15 Conference Related Discussions 15 of 16 NRSTA2::CLARK "Hour of Slack" 29 lines 17-FEB-1993 01:22 -< lotsa help, huh? >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- re -.1 Don; Like I said, I'm just guessing ... the message that was mentioned in -.2 sounded like the compress wouldn't work because the conference file is being accessed by something - my guess is it's being accessed by the notes server, which is a process that runs on your machine to allow members to access notesfiles on the machine. So you would want to shut this process down to allow the compress to work. I don't know the commands/procedures to use to do this, though ... you might want to check out the moderator's conference. <<< TURRIS::TURRIS$DKA200:[NOTES$LIBRARY]EASYNET_CONFERENCES.NOTE;2 >>> -< EasyNet Conference Directory >- ================================================================================ Note 1808.2 A conference for Moderators 2 of 2 LILITH::CALLAS "Manners before morals." 9 lines 25-AUG-1992 15:47 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Requests for membership should now be sent to any of the following: ERIS::CALLAS (Jon Callas) ACESMK::CHELSEA (Karen Christenson, aka Chelsea) If you are having trouble getting to the conference, then check to make sure that you have ERIS:: listed as node 19.82. Jon ================================================================================ Note 3.16 Conference Related Discussions 16 of 16 MEOC02::CASEY "VAXphone=MEO78B::CASEY" 12 lines 1-MAR-1993 17:12 -< I'm rather worried out here, Down Under.. >- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm very much afraid that irrespective of anything I try and do, TV_CHATTER seems to have a mind of its own when it comes to reclaimimg disk space formerly occupied by notes which have been deleted during the clean-out process. I've simply NEVER had this kind of trouble before and I'm beginning to think that the ONLY way I'm going to be able to get this Conference back to a reasonable size (it's currently occupying about 3,000 blocks) will be for me to restart it again. I'd hate to have to do that.. any other suggestions?? Don *8-)

Why are some of the notes set nowrite? I tried to reply to one of the soaps and LA Law and I couldn't reply. Did I miss something? Cheryl

Cheryl there were some minor glitches in the system at the host node - they were not 'set nowrite'. I'll check it out. Joyce

Holly Taylor will be helping to moderate the TV_CHATTER file. Mr. Don Casey will be globe-trotting for the next several weeks and Holly has agreed to help with the moderating. She will be a permanent member of the moderating staff. Welcome aboard Holly! Joyce (co-mod)

I will be doing some house cleaning in here today and tomorrow to make sure we don't max out and blow up while our host is globetrotting. Unlike the past TV file or the Movies conference most notes won't be saved after 30-60 period. Have fun! Joyce (co-mod)

Thanks to my fellow mods for working SO hard at keeping the size of this file down while I've been globe-trotting these last few weeks. It was really GREAT to meet some of you people in person at long last ... and also to meet a pair of lovely lobsters which I quickly devoured at Barbara's Crossing in Worcester, MA. Ahh but it IS good to be home.. Don *8-) P.S. I've just run a "compress" of the file and it resulted in me pulling down the occupied space from 3,800 blocks to a mere 2,700 or so.. which is pretty good, ladies ..thanks!

Well the time has almost come. I will be taking the Quantum Leap October 3. ::TV_CHATTER currently has 3 co-moderators but the two that will be left have their hands full with other conferences so I reccomended they replace me. If you would like to volunteer to assist in moderating this 'lightly moderated' conference, please drop a note to MEOC02::CASEY - Don Casey or AYRPLN::VENTURA - Holly Ventura Its been great, Joyce co-mod

3.17 | Bad FDL file | PCBUOA::LPIERCE | The Truth is Out There | Tue Mar 12 1996 15:47 | 21 |
FYI: If some of you are wondering why I am not moving alot of notes that need to be moved (like the seahunt trivia and swap/borrow tapes) it's because this file is located on a different server then mine, a server I don't have access to as of yet. This file has a bad FDL file that needs to be fixed and I can't fix it unless I get priv's. A bad FDL file makes certin MOD Commands impossible to do - like move notes. I hope I get the prives soon and I hope I can analyze the FDL file and correct it and then we can have a nice clean file. In the mean time - PLEASE do a DIR/TITLE= before you post any new notes. Thank you for your support. Lousia CO-MOD |
