| Richard,
I don't see a problem between these texts. Mark 2:26 does not say Abiathar
gave the showbread to David and his men. It says the action occured in the
days when Abiathar was the high priest. And the account in Sammuel does not
call the priest Ahimelech the high priest, it just refers to him as being
a priest.

| Reading on a little further in I Samuel (chapter 22), it does say
that Abiathar was the son of Ahimelech, but I don't find where it
identifies Abiathar as being the high priest at the time.
Maybe you can tell me, Leslie, how did one become a high priest
in ancient times? And what distinguished the high priest from other
priests at the time?

> Being a high priest was a family thing at the time of Christ.
This being so at the time of David, Abiathar would have inherited the
office from his father Ahimelech, who, as Leslie has pointed out, is
not identified as high priest, but simply priest.

Here's what I think. I think it's a boo-boo. I think the author
of Mark (or perhaps a copyist) got a wire crossed and set down the
name Abiathar instead of Ahimelech.
It's a small mistake in my estimation and doesn't affect the thrust
of the message.

| I shall do some research for you. I don't think Mike's answer is complete.
I do not think anyone got wires crossed.
