Have you ever heard someone say "That's MY kid. I'll do with him/her
as I see fit". Or "I'm not going to let MY kid do this or that". Or
"Stay away from MY kid", etc...
Now, we all know that Lincoln did away with the institution of people
owning people (at least in this country). And so a parent can't OWN a
child as in "MY kid". Yet it's clear that a parent has a lot of
responsibility for and authority over a child.
What's the threshold of tolerance here? Should a parent be allowed to
force a religion on a child? Should a parent be allowed to force a
dietary lifestyle on a child? A hair style? A language?
What about the more serious cases like where a child's parents were
opting for faith healing for what turned out to be a near fatal bowel
obstruction? If a Jehovah's witness child requires a blood
transfusion in order to survive, what should be done?
When/where should society as a whole be allowed to step in on behalf
of the child?
