1235.0. "Our Economic Priorities" by CSC32::J_CHRISTIE (Psalm 85.10) Fri Mar 22 1996 13:24

Economic responsibility for the way things are is not something
from which we can conveniently distance or isolate ourselves. We cannot
easily say, "This is none of my concern," because it's simply not the truth.
Our economic priorities, individually, as a community, and as a nation, are
a very telling indication of where are heads and hearts are. As Jesus said,
"For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."

What role has the church taken in counseling their members regarding
their economic responsibilities?

If generally people are affluent but don't feel like it, what
contribution has the church made in helping members evaluate lifestyle
expectations, using a different standard than the leisure industry provides?

Shalom,
Richard

I don't know about *the* church, but my church (Roman Catholic)
encourages us to give 10% to God. It is further encouraged that 5% go
toward supporting the parish and 5% to worthy charities.

I don't know if this is just a parish thing or global Roman Catholic
thing, but it's nice that they're not asking for the whole tithe for
    themselves.

    Eric,

    	I think that's a good thing.

What does your church say about the other 90%?

Liquor, drugs, women... that sort of thing :^)

I'm not sure there are specific suggestions, but if one were to follow
the life-lessons taught by the church the money would not be an object
of greed or lust or impropriety.

You forgot food and fast cars :-)

I guess we've dragged this subject around before. You give
(involuntarily) to a certain extent when you pay your taxes. Beyond
that it's a personal thing. Jesus was rather clear in describing how
much one should give if you want eternal life. But that's a hard one
    to swallow.
