| ZZ At times, Jesus appeared to redefine family, something which
ZZ present-day conservatives find extremely objectionable.
We know toward the end that Jesus gave charge to John to take care of
Mary, his mother. We also know that Jesus addressed the woman at the
well as having several husbands; an exhortation that although revealed
to her gently was also one of negative connotation.
What redefinition would be found extremely objectionable by
conservatives that Jesus would condone?

| Jesus' prohibition against divorce was not conservative but radical
liberal for the day. Women were given in marriage by the father to the
husband. Marriages were made primarily for political reasons. To unit
two factions or clans through intermarriage.
Jesus radically redefined the family by decreeing divorce to be wrong.
A man thus could not expell of women. An unmarried women in 1st
century society was an outcast with way of earning a living or taking
care of oneself.
Jesus also radically redefined the family to not only those united by
blood, but the family for Jesus is all those who do the will of God.
Jesus' family was the group of disciples, much more than the mother,
father, brothers, and sisters with whom he grew up.
Jesus is my kind of radical!

You appear to have missed my point. (Was it deliberate?)
Jesus indicated that his real brothers, sisters and mother were not
necessarily those related to him by blood or marriage.
Present-day conservatives say they object to attempts to redefine the family.
In reality, conservatives may not object to redefining the family so
much as objecting to the terms and conditions of the redefinition, but
that isn't what they're saying.
Shalom,
Richard
