1183.0. "Stoics and Stoicism" by CSC32::J_CHRISTIE (Ps. 85.10) Thu Nov 16 1995 12:39

Stoicism -- a Greek school of philosophy founded by Zeno about 308 BC.
The name was derived from gathering on a "stoa," Greek for porch or
colonnade.

Characterized by detachment and dispassion, the Stoics believed in an
orderly universe, not capricious, that reason ruled supreme, and that
fate governed a person's life. The universe is timeless and cyclical.
The soul may be immortal. But Stoicism was rational to the point of
being cold.

Some have speculated that Stoicism may have influenced the works of
the New Testament, especially the Gospel of John. It's likely Paul
encountered Stoics in his travels, especially at Athens.

We are not entirely without our Stoics even today.

Shalom,
Richard
