i remember Dick. i wrote to him a few times after i read
some of his notes in what later became CHRISTIAN. later
i met Dick at a house party and had the chance to speak
with him a little. Dick had an original way of looking
at things, history for example was not the same as what
is generally taught in high schools in this country.
it was shortly after this party that he died, i was told
that Dick was extremely unhappy and sad...i wish that he'd
stuck around, he was more than just passingly interesting
to talk with.. i pray he has found a measure of peace.

I knew Dick Martel as well as one can know anyone via notes. Back when
notesfiles were less restrained he and I used to go at it vigorously.
He was a talented man.

| I started noting in Christian just before he died and I remember
when it was announced that he did die. People were in shock. I
wish I had known him. If he was sad, I wish maybe I could have
eased his burden a bit. Also, it appears he'd have been a
stimulating guy to talk with and I'd have gotten into that.
