1117.0. "Applied Christianity" by CSC32::J_CHRISTIE (Ps. 85.10) Wed Jul 26 1995 20:11

I'm not impressed by dogma or systematic theology.

I'm interested in applied Christianity, practical Christianity, the Gospel
lived out. I'm interested in the light that shines like a city on a hill.
I'm interested in the life and power that by its very expression glorifies
God.

I'm rather disappointed that the former seems to receive so much emphasis
over the latter.

Shalom,
Richard

I think, in part, it's the medium.

In a verbal medium like this, it is much easier to talk than
do, so the emphasis is on words rather than deeds.

This may not be the only media bias -- to most people the
image of Christianity is the Sunday morning service, and the
essence of the Sunday morning service is the sermon.
*Obviously* the emphasis will be on dogma over action.

(Action is pretty dull if you just talk about it!)

      Hi Richard,

I confess to having an improper balance in my experience,
but I believe the 'systematic theology' part is also
        extremely important.

The last generation WILL KNOW in whom they believe and
their appreciation of Him will, in part, be based on
an intelligent understanding of God's ways.

I wouldn't want to dilute that all the while I acknowledge
my shortcomings in this area, i.e. my 'bent' for the
doctrine and the fact that I need the Lord to use me better
in the area of practical ministry.

    	Good Topic.

richard, i totally share your skepticism of dogma and of systematic
theology.

i watched a documentary recently on the practice of prayer. a priest
who was interviewed made a very interesting remark; he said 'theology
is the estrangement of god.'

what use is dust gathering paper to define a living god?

what credibility does a faith have if it serves not to live life?

i am convinced that the founder of christianity would turn in his
grave if he knew how his message is surrounded by dogma and by
countless libraries of dust gathering paper...

Well, andreas, the founder is said to have left the grave! :-)

I would like to expand on this a bit.

It seems to me that faith not made manifest through actions is a pretty
inconsequential thing, like a snowflake on a hot stove. It seems to me also
that many strive to avoid sins of commission, relatively unconcerned
about committing sins of omission. It seems to me that Jesus was quite
clear that things we fail to do is every bit as important as the wrongs
we do.

Shalom,
Richard

Right, Richard. But all meaningful action is preceded by thought.
What one believes, thus how one acts, is based on what one has been
    taught or has learned.

It is impossible to apply Christianity practically without
understanding what it is and what it is not. The Bible is the source
of knowledge of Christianity and its practices.

1117.10How easy it is to set aside the weightier teachingsCSC32::J_CHRISTIEPs. 85.10Mon Aug 14 1995 18:019
Matthew 23:23

[Jesus speaking here:]
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye
pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the
weightier [matters] of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith:
these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

 ZZZ judgment, mercy, and faith:

It seems that the one who would set this aside would be the one who
rejects grace as a condition for their salvation!
