| | John,

Reserving Topic 1000 for discussion on the millenium was brilliant.

I just read an article in a local weekly, that predicted that crimes
-- especially crimes of violence and, more especially crimes in relation
to sects -- will continue to increase in the predominantly Christian
parts of the world as the year 2000 approaches. The article was triggered
by the recent mass suicide (or mass murder) of 40-plus sect members in
    Switzerland and Canada.
The underlying message was that, if the end of the world is nigh, then
a "live today, die tomorrow" attitude will gather strength as the "end"
approaches. Cast caution to the winds and enjoy life -- at whatever the
    cost.
I somehow feel that, even if a little alarmist, the underlying thought
could have some truth: food for thought anyway.

    Greetings, Derek.

PS: I predict that the dawn of the 21st century will, in most
countries, be celebrated at midnight on 31 December 1999 and not 31
    December 2000.
Which raises the question: Is "The millenium" equivalent to "the start
    of the new century"?

| | Actually, I look forward to the millenium. I believe that the rise of religious
fervor throughout the world, and here, will die down considerably when the
millenium passes and we are still here. I am not really looking forward to the
intervening years, however, as I suspect that things will get worse (from my
point of view, of course) before they get better.
