967.0. "A Modern Day Thomas" by SNOFS2::MATTHEWS () Sun Sep 11 1994 21:51

Yesterday a very poor copy (showing signs of faxing and multiple
photo-copies) of an item from "Weekly World News" of Feb 1 1994 was
given to me for examination. The item shows a photograph of clouds near
El Paso. The clouds are in the form of two heads. The caption on the
photo reads "Bible experts examined this photo and concluded that the
images are indeed the faces of Jesus and Satan". The item "By-line" is
Laurel Bowie who quotes the photographer Terrence Holtze saying that he
took the photo some 40 miles outside El Paso on Jan 5 1994 and then
flagged down a busload of people who also saw the cloud shapes. Dallas
theologian Dr Anthony Padula is quoted as saying that the images
suggest Judgment Day is near whereas LA theologian Dr Barnard Montoff
suggests that the entire episode is a product of mass hysteria.

I would like to see a qood quality copy of the photo taken by Holtze.
From this little PC on which I am typing this note I could readily
create a "cloud" picture similar to the one from the "Weekly World
News" but in my case the likeness of Jesus would not look so much like
one from a WASP Sunday School Picture Book Bible and Satan's face
would depict a face which my lusts would be attracted to (everyone to
his own devil?) rather than one of ugliness and anger.

I wonder how the Bible experts know what the faces of Jesus and satan
    look like?

Can someone provide me with details to contact "Weekly World News" please?

    .0 Welcome to C-P, Downunder!

I'm not familiar with the publication you're asking about. I've
heard of "U.S. News and World Report."

And I, too, have real questions about what Jesus really looks like.

I recently sent a postcard to Cindy Painter (who notes here on rare
occasion and who has visited Australia). It bore a depiction of a
black Jesus, which would have been tricky to render in puffy, white
    cumulus.  ;-}

    Shalom,
    Richard

"Weekly World News" is a supermarket tabloid, like the "National Enquirer".
It typically has stories about space aliens, psychic predictions, Elvis
sightings, JFK-is-alive, Hitler-is-alive, and the like. I wouldn't take
anything in it seriously.

"Weekly World News" is not like the "National Enquirer".

_None_ of the "news" it contains is real; absolutely everything is made up.

It's a _parody_ of the "National Enquirer". Sort of a serious-looking "Mad"
magazine.

I didn't realize that WWN was intended as a parody of the National Enquirer,
but at least I was right that nothing in WWN should be taken seriously. My
apologies to National Enquirer fans...

My .0 was written so that I can attempt to verify the article and
photograph in question. I wish to write, fax, enet the "newspaper" to
buy (for $0.00 hopefully) a copy of the photograph and obtain contact
addresses to the guy who took the photograph as well as the two
gentlemen with phd's quoted in the article. Is there not someone in the
Texas area who could get me at least the address of the paper?

I am involved in a prison ministery at our local prison where the above
photograph is the second of the type to be circulated amongst the
Christian inmates. Now if these photographs are real then some of us
perhaps should be a little more prepared than we are for the final
event. Now if the photographs are fakes then some who are trying to
live their Christian lives in a hard place are being deluded by junk
    from a sick society.

Merely stating that a newspaper does not print factual articles
helps Christians neither inside nor outside prison. Some of my fellow
workers are apt to be impressed by everything seen in the "Christian"
    press.

If this publication is simply a lampoon as .4 has stated (And
based on John Covert's track record with regards to accuracy, I have
every confidence that it is), then the photo and quotes were entirely
a hoax. Hence, as I understand it, there's no substance to either the
    photo or the accompanying story.

If I see a copy of the paper, I'll jot down the address of the
    publishers for you.

May God bless your prison ministry.

From what I have read of John's contributions in here and elsewhere
Richard makes me wholeheartedly agree with you. However, telling
susceptible people that I have it on good authority from a Christian on
the "far side" of this planet does not hold much weight - it sounds as
if I have simply found another sceptic to agree with me. (perhaps
someone like the Pope could help me but then most of we WASP's don't
acknowledge his authority) So if the publisher details can be tracked
down I will be most thankful.

967.10Every single article in the entire paper is a JOKE!COVERT::COVERTJohn R. CovertWed Sep 14 1994 18:0742
You can contact the publisher at:

	Weekly World News, Inc.
	600 S. East Coast Ave.
	Lantana, Florida 33462

I'll betcha that any serious inquiry will be answered with an equally
serious response. Remember, this thing claims that all its stories are
true, but you'd have to be seriously retarded to believe any of them if
you have an issue of WWN in your hands.

Here is the front page headline from the August 16th issue:

	JUPITER RADIOS EARTH FOR HELP.
Comet disaster proves LIFE EXISTS on giant planet.

And some other headlines collected and posted on the walls of one of my
co-workers' offices:

We're giving away our baby -- so we won't make our poodles jealous.

Woman runs out of toilet paper & kills herself.

How to turn any man into a slave.

	BIGFOOT STOLE MY WIFE!

U.S. & RUSSIA JOIN FORCES TO DEFEND EARTH FROM UFO INVASION.

Working stiffs: Companies hiring corpses to replace live workers.

	Man's body rusting like a '47 Buick.

	Knife-toting crook steals 20 boxes of Preparation-H.

BIZARRE DISEASE MAKES VICTIMS CARRY SPATULAS!

BIZARRE DISEASE MAKES PEOPLE BARK LIKE DOGS!

Sicko glues bearded men together by their whiskers.

Enough?

967.14A "serious" letter in the mailSNOFS2::MATTHEWSFri Sep 16 1994 11:3710
I was given the impression that the rag was a "Christian" paper. I will
extract these comments and perhaps put together a few words concerning
false signs and wonders for the men I visit each Sunday afternoon. The
cloud article seems quite serious and genuine when seen out of context
away from the types of other articles mentioned.

I will write to the address given and post here whatever response is
    returned.

    Many thanks from Downunder
