849.0. "Not with gold or pearls or costly array" by CSC32::J_CHRISTIE (Honorary Lesbian) Tue Feb 08 1994 22:16

I Timothy 2:9-10 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in
modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with
broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
But (which becometh women professing godliness) with
good works. [kjv]

I Timothy advises against women wearing jewelry, gold anyway. Hmmmm.
'Spose that includes her gold wedding set, too? I've got to admit,
rings are symbols inherited from pagan traditions.

Hmmm... you get a real kick out of this don't you?

Read the entire text and put this verse in its proper context and its
basically validating that appearances are vain... its the inward person
    God looks at.

    Nancy,
Your explaination sounds correct. No problem at all. But, again,
scripture needs to be studied and interpreted...always.

Does that mean that makeup, manicures, breast implants, hair coloring,
hair implants, etc, etc, are all evil. Each keeps us from focusing on
    what is really important.

Patricia, you may not like my answer, but YES, they are evil. When
someone has been given their body in which to live by our God, then we
should accept that body as is.

The only exception to that rule [which is questionable imho as well] is
for disfigurement. I believe that changing something that already
exists in perfect working order and fixing something that exists in not
so good working order are two different things.

I find it very disturbing that men change themselves into women and
women change themselves into men... because of some mental element
that says I'm trapped in a body that isn't me.

It is much better to address the emotional element then to cosmetically
    cover up the real issues.

Yeah, but... the question was is it evil to wear earrings and lipstick.

Yeah, I know the thrust of what .0 is getting at. I also know that
it squares with the *Book*, and thus, according to some anyway, making
    everyone's personal perspectives moot.

You addressed those other things, and them some, without addressing the
fundamental question of the base note. Unless in your broad statement
of "... YES, they are evil" you were referring to jewelry, braided
(broidered) hair, makeup, and pretty clothes.

    How about pierced ears?

    Are pierced ears an abomination?

A mutilation of the body for the sake of decoration.

By the way, I have pierced ears?

I think the verses in .0 and the others around it are a plea to
avoid ostentatiousness. I think that perhaps modest is a relative
term but one that is useful none the less. I think the references
to gold and pearls and braided hair refer to things that can all too
easily be over done. The over riding thread of I Timothy 2 seems to
me that deeds are more important then physical appearance. If we
seek to be seen as "good" by what we wear then we are missing the
mark. Rather there are other things that we should set out that others
    should notice.

Alfred, that is exactly what I meant. I don't want to focus on the
semantics of pierced ears [tho' I don't have them] and wot not.

    However,
I do not know one person who had breast implant that did it for God...

    Or

A person who had a facelift for God...

Most of the time these kinds of surgeries are cosmetic to meet one of
the rudimental desires in our lives, sex, money, greed.. [as entered
    into another note]...

I think the base note means, get your priorities straight!
