817.0. "United Nations, John Paul, Year of the Family" by CSC32::J_CHRISTIE (On loan from God) Mon Jan 03 1994 00:07

1994 has been declared the International Year of the Family by the United
Nations. Pope John Paul II has said that the church will actively support
the UN initiative.

Now, it's been my experience that conservative Christians generally do not
favor the United Nations or its programs. In light of world events of the
last 5 or so years, what are some current perspectives regarding the United
Nations?

Peace,
Richard

This is not the first time my Pastor has chosen a theme for our church
that coincides with a nationwide tactic. The first one was "Back to
    Basics".

My Pastor selects the theme for the following year usually by February
or March of the previous year. Why? Because he prints the theme on
many different items that gets distributed throughout that year. He's
a planner, organizer, and financial genius. He's learned the art of
    quantity and quality buying.

The theme as revealed in our New Years Eve service is "Family '94".

Is this truly the year of the family for the UN? When I hear them
condemn abortion I will believe them.

As for my personal perspectives regarding the UN, I view the UN as
a core of idealists all to often prohibited from doing good by third
    world politics.

.2 Are you saying that support for the family is not legitimate,
sincere or worthwhile unless there is total opposition to abortion?

    I don't think so.

RE: .3 I'm saying it's not complete. And I didn't mean to imply
total opposition. As I've siad before, abortion to save the life
of a mother, as in some other uses of deadly force in self defence,
seems to me to be moral.
