I was recently involved in a fascinating exercise through a church class I'm taking and I am proposing this string to be dedicated to the exercise. Write a letter to your child who is about to leave home, perhaps for college or some other milestone reason. Lavish it with advice you believe would be helpful and beneficial throughout your child's adult life. Use may refer to the book of Proverbs as you write it or you may read through Proverbs afterwards to see how many similar things you might have said. Though I had only 10 minutes or so, you may take all the time you desire. I will submit the letter I composed separately. Peace, Richard

Dear Kid, Keep this stuff in mind: Listen to everyone, but never let anyone's influence have precedence over your own heart. Listen always for the still, small voice of God. Never stop learning. Never stop working. Never stop playing. Make your life a work of art in progress. Avoid being taken advantage of, but stick up for those who cannot stick up for themselves. Do all the good you can. Be extremely careful in your choice of a life partner and your children all the attention you can. Earn your pay at an honest job and you'll sleep well at night. Do not keep money or wealth as the focus of your life. Life is much more than you can have though possessions. Don't give much credence to windbags like [name deleted]. Enjoy your life. Second chances at it are purely speculative. Love, Dad | |||||

I've thought of this from time to time myself in a slightly different context. However, the first thing in my letter would be: Serve the Lord gladly and always. Frankly, all else that I can imagine is mostly commentary based on that. Alfred |
