782.0. "God's call to be a peculiar people" by CSC32::J_CHRISTIE (War is costly, Peace priceless) Tue Dec 07 1993 23:10

Many Christians have observed that God's people are called to be
"peculiar," called out, set apart or "separate" from the rest of
the world.

Bible verses follow:

Exodus 19:5 (KJV) Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep
my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above
all people: for all the earth [is] mine:

Deuteronomy 14:2 (KJV) For thou [art] an holy people unto the LORD thy God, and
the LORD hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto himself,
above all the nations that [are] upon the earth.

Deuteronomy 26:18-19 (KJV) And the LORD hath avouched thee this day to be his
peculiar people, as he hath promised thee, and that [thou]
shouldest keep all his commandments; And to make thee high above all
nations which he hath made, in praise, and in name, and in honour;
and that thou mayest be an holy people unto the LORD thy God, as
he hath spoken.

Psalm 135:4 (KJV) For the LORD hath chosen Jacob unto himself, [and]
Israel for his peculiar treasure.

I Peter 2:9 (KJV) But ye [are] a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an
holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the
praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his
marvellous light:

Titus 2:14 (KJV) Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from
all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people,
zealous of good works.

The Titus scripture is really the epitomy of peculiar today, dontcha
    think?

    "zealous to do good works"

I mean everytime I go out a door, someone *rushes* over to open it for
me. And of course, in traffic once I turn my blinker on, the car in
the lane on which I wish to merge, always slows down to let me go
ahead. And how can I forget Christmas shopping when I went to pick up
the last item on the shelf at the same time as someone else, and they
handed it to me and refused to take it back. And when I was sick and
in bed for 2 weeks, all my neighbors mowed my lawn and sent warm food
and were kind to my children.

Yeah... this would be peculiar world.. but a welcomed one.

It's always seemed a little odd to me. If the whole world were
to become "Christianized" as some believe it is supposed to be, then
whatever is peculiar about God's people will become normal, and therefore,
    no longer be peculiar.

    Shalom,

    Richard:

This is true. That may be why Jesus said that broad is the gate that
leads to destruction, and many are those who enter through it.

"Peculiar" has a number of meanings, some of which do not
imply oddity or rarity but merely a distinct characteristic.

 	Bob,

Thanks for sharing that, it reminded me of the distinct
characteristic that Jesus mentioned in John 13:34,35.

.4 I agree, Bob. Yet on some level, I can't help but think of
the Amish when I think of God's "peculiar people."

    Peace,
