754.0. "Jesus Christ, Superman: The Hero Factor" by CSC32::J_CHRISTIE (Pacifist Hellcat) Wed Nov 03 1993 22:18

There are some interesting parallels that might be made between some of
our ideas about Jesus Christ and the fictional hero, Superman. Consider
these:

	o Unusual birth circumstances.
o A man unlike all other men.
	o Wondrous abilities.
o Concerned with truth and justice.
	o Epitome of goodness.
	o Uncompromising in character.
	o Seen as a rescuer, a savior.
o Champion of the weak and powerless.
o Wants to be loved without the having to fulfill
the chronic desire for miraculous works. (from Lois Lane
	   in the case of Superman)

Are there simply some common characteristics among those who we tend to hold
in high regard?

Peace,
Richard

I'm a little surprised this note hasn't taken off, even if only to say,
    "What an absurd comparison!"

Jesus usually shows up on surveys of heroes in America. I remember
when, according to a poll taken when I was in college, the 3 most
admired men in history by college students were: Jesus Christ, Albert
    Schweitzer, and Groucho Marx.

754.2The Classic American HeroCSC32::J_CHRISTIEPacifist HellcatWed Nov 10 1993 19:4922
Let me add a few other qualities and we'll have the classic American
hero as exemplified by Arnold Schwartzenegger, Sylvester Stallone,
Bruce Willis, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Clint Eastwood and a bazillion
others:

	o A loner.
o Often has a brooding nature.
o Nearly always in complete control.
	o Macho image.
	o Peerless.
o Speaks tersely to antagonist(s). Have you ever notice how
polished and polite the "heavy" in movies usually is?
o Fed up with the ineffective "system."
	o Makes his own rules.
o Often an outsider to the "system."
	o Keeps tender feelings concealed.
o A man of few words and strong action.
	o Has incredible luck.
o Always forced into fighting and the use of violence.

Peace,
Richard

754.3The Two KingsCSC32::J_CHRISTIEOn loan from GodSun Jan 09 1994 21:5921
Last Saturday was Elvis Presley's birthday. He would have been 59 years
old and about 400 pounds.

A book is now out entitled "The Two Kings," by A.J. Jacobs (Bantam). The
book is based on the true-life incident when Elvis revealed to his hairdresser
that he was the Messiah. Says Jacobs, "Now there is startling evidence he
may have been right."

Consider these errie coincidences:

o Jesus said, "Man shall not live by bread alone"; Elvis ate his bread
   with peanut butter and bananas.

o Jesus was the Good Shepherd; Elvis dated Cybill Shepherd.

o Jesus said, "love thy neighbor"; Elvis said, "Don't Be Cruel."

o Jesus had irregular eating habits - he fasted 40 days and nights; Elvis
had irregular eating habits - he liked 5 banana splits for breakfast.
