Actually, that is a myth. There is no evidence that Darwin 'recanted' on his
deathbed.

One can understand why some Christians object to terms such
as "the Christ myth" if, in every other context, the word
"myth" is deliberately chosen for the connotation of "not
historically true".
(Of course I know that one of the definitions of "myth" is a
story that explains some "practice, rite, or phenomenon of
nature" typically in terms of divine action.)

For purposes of accuracy, I used the word myth to denote 'an ill-founded belief
held uncritically esp. by an interested group'. In this context, the
definition fits.
BTW, Richard, Darwin was very much aware of the controversy his theory would
cause. He deliberately delayed its publication until his hand was forced by
the impendent publication of another scientist, and in subsequent writings he
very clearly stated the religious and philosophical implications of the theory
of evolution.
