682.0. "Redemption" by SDSVAX::SWEENEY (Patrick Sweeney in New York) Thu May 20 1993 23:39
Redemption is the restoratation of grace and eternal life with God.
It is redemption from, delivery from, atonement for
sin, suffering, and death
by the suffering, death, and resurection of the sinless one, the
Messiah, Jesus Christ.
The Old Testament has sacrifices which took place at the Temple. With
the destruction of the Temple, the sacrifices stopped and that
connection with the Old Testament (starting with Abel, and through
Levi) was broken. Modern Judaism has the Day of Atonement but no
sacrifice for atonement. Christianity holds that Jesus died once and
for all in perfect atonement and in fulfillment of the prophecy of
Isiah who wrote: (Is. 53:11)
After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light of life and be
satisified, by his knowledge, my righteous servant will justify many,
and he will bear their iniquities.
So the idea of no notion of redemption in the Old Testament is not a
cause for laughter, but it is alarming because the direct consequence
of the rejection of the need for redemption is rejection of a need for
the life, ministry, suffering, and death of Jesus. The longer
explanation is in Romans 5 which I entered in part in some other note.

But "at one ment" doesn't have any meaning in English!
At least "altogether" can be separated as "al[l] to get her".

| I once heard a sermon entitled "GODISNOWHERE," which can be seperated
out to either "God is nowhere" or "God is now here," depending on your
point of view.
I once mis-read a bumpersticker that said "HUG THERAPIST." The spacing
was a little off and it looked like "HUG THE RAPIST."
This is getting more than a bit off the topic, so I'll leave it at this.
