630.0. "Defending God" by 29067::J_CHRISTIE (Rise Again!) Fri Apr 02 1993 16:51

During my training as a hospital chaplain, I was taught that God needs
no one to defend God.

It was a good thing to know, because I heard a lot of negative feelings
expressed towards God while serving as chaplain. After I got over the
almost instinctive impulse to react defensively, it became a relief to me
to know that I didn't have to come up with a single excuse, I didn't have
to prove anything, and I didn't have to take anything said to me about God
personally.

Now it appears to me that some people do indeed feel a special responsibility
to rush to the defense of God, or the church, or the Bible, or some particular
doctrine - potentially volatile topics, all.

What has your response been when you felt some aspect of your faith was
under attack? How have you dealt with it?

Peace,
Richard

No one has perfect faith. It isn't God being attacked, but
        our faith in God.

For those people who believe in God, that faith is at the very core of
who they believe themselves to be. An attack on the object of that
belief would equate to an attack on the core of that person's being.
    Makes sense to me.

I think that's why it's so difficult to maintain a healthy sharing in
here without personal attacks. The subject matter of this conference
is faith and faith is that from which we live our lives, i.e. our core
beliefs. It's very threatening to have those core beliefs challenged.
If those beliefs are threatened, then our own self-identity is
threatened as well. Lately I've been trying to keep this in mind when
I read something in here that really fans the flames. Maybe what
triggered the response that's inspiring flames in me was a perceived
threat to those core beliefs in someone else.

    Hi All:

I agree with Nanci and that's why I feel it is so important to climb
over doctrine to get to truth, it can be done!!
