620.0. "Cathedrals" by DEMING::VALENZA (From soup to notes.) Wed Mar 17 1993 15:17

    "Winchester Cathedral,
    You're breaking me down
You stood and you watched as
    My baby left town.

    A dowdy a dow. A dowdy a dow. A dowdy a dow-dow-dow-dow."

Carole and I sang that and England Swings Like a Pendulum Do as we
drove over 1600 miles around Great Britain. 8^) 8^)

Don said that the Catherdrals lost their religious significance for
him after the stark beauty of Avebury and Stonehenge, although we all
loved the tranquility we found at the ruins of the Glastonbury Abbey.
We felt a stronger sense of connection to the Divine at these
places and some of the simpler stone circles and Holy wells than at
the elaborate Cathedrals that seemed more a tribute to man than a
place to worship God.

    Ro,

When you sang it, did you hold your noses so you'd have the proper
    nasal twang? :-)

As a matter of fact we did or was that 'cause we passed so many pig
farms?! ;')

In the last summer Olympics (an event rooted in pagan tradition, I'll
remind you), which was held in Barcelona, the television audience was
exposed several times to a most extraordinary cathedral. It is still
under construction. It was the last obsession of its architect who is
now dead.

I don't recall the architect's name, but I understand we get the English
word "gaudy" as a derivative of it.

    richard,

the architect's name is Gaudi y Cornet. our English word is a
bit older and prob'ly derived from Latin or French.

so could the question be, "is Gaudi gaudy?" %-)

I would categorize what I saw of the cathedral as gaudy. Still, it was
    hauntingly spectacular; impressive and majestic.

Richard,

I saw that Catherdral when I went on a Mediterranean cruise with my
parents in 1989. It doesn't look quite as 'gaudy' up close and you
can see the detail of the sculptures. I'm blurry on the history, but
I think it has been being built for centuries.

I have some nice pictures of it, if you'd like I can send them to you.

one of the customs in my family is to go to the Cathedral in
the Pines for sunrise services for Easter.

i know that many of the readers here might never of heard of
it and i can't think of any good reason why they should. i haven't
gone myself since i was a boy, and if the weather we've been
having here in New England continues, i would expect that this
year's service will require heavy overcoats.

still i remember it as a spot of great tranquility and would
recommend a visit to anyone who is so inclinded.

peter,

Well that sure conjures up memories for me. Don and I went there
after a spiritual retreat we attended in Fitzwilliam, NH. It was
there that we realized that we liked each other as more than friends
and decided to start dating! September 7, 1991 and we were married a
year from that day!

We did that once, and sat upon benches covered with about an
        inch of crusty snow!
