566.0. "Vigil: Jan 9th - 10th" by JUPITR::MNELSON () Mon Dec 14 1992 12:45
Pope John Paul II has invited European Christians, Jews, and Moslems
to join him in a prayer vigil for peace in Assisi, Italy on January
9th - 10th. European religious leaders from these faiths have been
invited to participate. He said he hoped the meeting would renew the
spirit of the 1986 World Day of Prayer for Peace in Assisi which was
convoked by the pope and attended by religious leaders worldwide.
The pope is particularly concerned about the conflict in the Balkans.
He said that other European contries have suffered renewed terrorist
violence. "But the tragic war in Bosnia-Hercegovnia calls in a
particular way for the attention of the church in Europe." he said. The
fighting there has left "a painful trail of death and ruin, of
atrocities and injustice of every type, sparing no one: not even women,
the elderly, babies or defenseless civilians."

Please consider adding your powerful prayers to those of our religious
leaders and European brothers and sisters during this Vigil for Peace.
