| They're both here, thanks -- but they don't coexist very well.
Usually one *or* the other is dominant -- wish I could persuade
them to *share* more and thus achieve more balance in may life!

| The Mary and Martha story speaks to me as a women. It is a liberation
story and I love the story as a liberation story. Jesus' message in
inviting women into the spiritual community is refreshing.
Given the historic setting of 2000 years ago it is inspirational.

| I'm much more the "Martha" type. I think we need both types but
I don't see any real need for everyone to be both types in one.

Martha represents early life for me, totally controlled and restrained.
Mary was amoung the aspects restrained, sometimes missing and sometimes
the wild escapee. Harmony did not exist, there was no balance. Both
have their place in my life Mary being the child that wonders and hugs,
Martha maintaining order and disipline when proper.

| My pastor gave a sermon a few weeks ago on Mary and Martha. It turns out
that Mary is more a part of me than I had previously thought.
I've always thought of myself as a "Martha." And I've always felt a little
guilty for my reluctance to let go of getting things accomplished.
God knows we could not survive long without the Marthas of the world, the
pragmatists, the house-in-order responsibility-takers. The Marthas of the
world do not always receive the credit they deserve because sometimes
what they do just isn't noticed until it stops being done.
Mary is more likely to send you a silly card or a bouquet of flowers for no
special reason. Mary is more likely to go out of her way to introduce herself
to you and welcome you to church if she's not seen you there before. And
you know something? I've been known to do these Mary kinds of things.
And I've been thinking. You know, many of the things Martha does is because
of the Mary in her. Such is the nature of respite care, hospice, and so much
more.
Peace,
Richard
