449.0. "The Mission of the Church" by CSC32::J_CHRISTIE (Peace: the Final Frontier) Thu May 07 1992 16:41

What do you consider to be the mission of the church?

Peace,
Richard

The mission of the church is

o to teach and preach the good news of Christ Jesus

o to serve as an instrument to bring about the Realm of the Sovereign

o to witness and struggle for peace and justice

o to spiritually nourish and speak to the condition of its members
	  and the wider community

	o to inspire and challenge

o to comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comfortable

Peace,
Richard

I might quible about your ordering but that's pretty much how I
	see it as well.

Though I'm not sure what this line actually means:

>	o to serve as an instrument to bring about the Realm of the Sovereign

'Realm of the Sovereign' equals the traditional phrase 'Kingdom of God'
    or 'Kingdom of Heaven.'

I expect to get beaten up about this, but here goes anyway.

Pardon my french, but it seems to me that the church, as a whole, does
d*mn little "to afflict the comfortable", if, by "the comfortable" you
mean the well-off, the wealthy, or the rich. Oh, there are some
movements here and there that may actually try to do this, but I would
say the popular impression the church gives today, at least in the
USA, is that its mission includes *accommodating* the comfortable.

     Think "Peace",

     Alvin

RE: .3 That was the part of the line I *did* understand. :-) What
I didn't understand was the role of the church in bringing this
	about.

Re .4

Oh, but Alvin, I *agree*!! The Church is not always successful in
fulfilling its mission.

Peace,
Richard
