272.1 | You might encounter the Spirit | CSC32::J_CHRISTIE | Full of green M&M's | Thu Jul 11 1991 19:51 | 26 |
| This may come as a great disillusionment to some, but it's a very
risky thing to encounter and to receive the Spirit of the Living God.
In 1835 Albert G. Finney, known as the father of modern revivalism,
wrote a piece called the "Consequences of having the Spirit". Allow me to
share with you a few of the points he makes in it:
1. You will be called eccentric; and probably you will deserve it.
Probably you will really be eccentric. I never knew a person who was filled
with the Spirit, that was not called eccentric. And the reason is, that they
are unlike other people...
2. It is not unlikely you will be thought deranged by many. We judge
men to be deranged when they act differently from what we think to be prudent
and according to common sense, and when they come to conclusions for which we
can see no reasons...
3. You must make up your mind to have much opposition, both in the
church and in the world. Very likely the leaders of the church will oppose
you...
4. Some people think that spiritual Christians are always happy and
free from sorrow. There never was a greater mistake...
Peace,
Richard

You will be dispised by the world.
You will be brought before kings and rulers to give account of your
faith.
You will be hated by all men for His sake.
If they treated Christ that way, why would we be any different.
Being a christian is NOT socially acceptable. It is because
as christians we don't conform to the worlds expectation. In a
time when all of the world is crying out for temperance and acceptance
the Bible still says, "Come out from among them and BE YE SEPARATE".

But Ed, many people feel that Christians treat them the way you are
saying Christians are being treated.

I think that Carole said it best. What you have said can be held for
many different types of people. My question is, who is in the group that's
supposed to be perfect? ;-)

Many people that say christians have treated them that way haven't
met me.
re. .4
Isn't obvious, I'M in the perfect group.
The wording in my reply is close (I hope) to what Jesus told his
disciples. Not my wording, so if you want to complain talk to Jesus.
As for the way 'other groups' are being treated there is little that
I can do about their perception except show them the love that Jesus
shows me.
