249.1 | Cal Hoe & family | CSC32::J_CHRISTIE | Human | Wed Jun 05 1991 21:09 | 23 |
| Last night I heard from Cal Hoe via telephone. He sends his greetings to
all here in the noting community. Cal found his Cursillo experience this
past weekend rewarding and enriching.
A lot of us had followed the growth of Sammy, the Hoe's son, through updates
in Cal's "personal_name." Sammy turned 3 last month (May 3rd, 1991).
Cal asked for prayers for his spouse, Judy, who is facing major surgery to
fuse her right ankle. She is in incredible pain, Cal says. And, according
to the doctors, the worst thing they could do at this point is to do nothing.
Complicating matters, Judy's heart has stopped under anesthesia twice before
in the past.
Cal is still pursuing job prospects. But he expressed his gratefulness to the
Lord that he can take this time to nurse and care for Judy, and also, to provide
Sammy with the attention a young child needs and deserves. He's grateful,
too, for the folks who've taken Sammy for a day or an afternoon and given
Cal and Judy a little bit of a break.
Anyone wanting to send Cal a personal note may address it to me and I will
make sure it gets to Cal.

| I heard from Cal Hoe today. Employment possibilities are emerging. Two
strong possibilities are in the San Jose area and one is here in Colorado
Springs. Cal's personal preference is to remain in the Springs. However,
he is "remaining open to the leadings of the Lord," as he puts it.
Judy still requires surgery.
Let's keep the Hoe family in our prayers.
Peace,
Richard

| Cal Hoe called late last night and announced that, to his great pleasure
and praise to our loving, creator God, the Hoe family will be remaining
in Colorado Springs. Cal has accepted a position with another computer
company. I won't mention the name, but it does rhyme with "pray!" ;-}
He starts next Monday at the same salary he was earning at DEC.
Further, the Hoe's have extended an offer on a house only a few blocks
away from the Jones-Christie domecile. We might just be neighbors in
the near future.
I told Cal that I realized these times of transition can be very stressful
and that we would continue to keep him, Judy, and Sammy in our prayers.
Peace,
Richard

Yeah? Me, too.
Here's the one I'm sending out this year: *<8+}**
==============================================================================
Advent 1991
Dear Friends,
I'm pleased to be writing you this season. Unlike last year
at this time, our nation seems less stubbornly intent on jangling
sabers in the name of sovereignty, righteousness, and ultimately, our
oil interests. This is not to ignore the lamentable fact that there
remain numerous global locations embroiled in the insanity of war.
With Divine guidance, may we faithfully struggle to bring about a
cohesive peace with all the cohabitants of this battered and wounded
planet.
To bring you up to date on the events of our family:
Jennifer (16) is a bright and popular high school sophomore
and an excellent student. She's employed part-time at Dairy Queen.
She's working diligently towards paying off her car.
Ricky (11) is in the sixth grade. He's taking Kenpo (Karate-
Kung Fu) lessons and has earned his yellow belt (3rd level). He spent
nearly three weeks this summer doing chores on his Aunt Kathleen and
Uncle Bill's farm in Shawnee, Kansas. He also explored the lifestyles
of radical Christian social activists by sharing a few days in the
company of our dear friends Peter and Mary Sprunger-Froese.
To provide parental guidance and nurturing to our children
during the evenings, Sharon resigned her staff position as Director
of Religious Education at All Souls Unitarian Church when my work
hours were changed to second shift. Still Sharon managed to take a
continuing education class on intimacy, to workout at the "Y", and
to enjoy the extraordinary beauty of our vicinity through several
brief bicycle excursions.
As for me, well, I've sharply curtailed many of my community,
scholastic, and church involvements. I've moved my church membership
to Pikes Peak Metropolitan Community Church where I've served on
occasion as pulpit supply and in other ways.
We thoroughly enjoyed the visits of my father, Vern Christie,
and our friends Bob and Donna Manor, the Bruce and Donna Morgan family,
and author-lecturer Beverly Barbo. We also enjoyed our trip to Kansas
in July.
It is my most earnest prayer that your Christmas is filled
with significance and joy, and your New Year with prosperity and
contentment. May you realize a dream or two. May you continue to
grow in mind and spirit. May you commit multiple acts of indiscriminate
kindness and generosity.
Quantum quantities of love,
Richard

Greetings!
You have been selected to be one of the lucky recipients
of this year's annual Jones-Christie catch-up-on-what's-been-
happening-with-us-since-last-year form letters! Congratulations
just might be in order.
Okay, so it's not that exciting. 1992 just hasn't been
filled with oodles of extraordinary events in our lives. Allow me,
however, to share these few updates.
Ricky is now in Junior High School.
Jennifer will be graduating from High School the Spring of
1993 and plans to attend the University of Arizona in Tucson in
the Fall.
Sharon is taking classes at UCCS. She hopes to complete the
requirements for her Bachelor's Degree in the next few semesters.
It came as a bit of a blow this year for us to learn that Sharon has
arthritis, the effects of which she's valiantly attempting to stave
off with a regimen of exercise and diet -- well, most of the time.
For the moment, I remain employed by Digital Equipment
Corporation, where I've managed to survive several waves of
down-sizing. It's unpredictable how long workforce reductions
will continue. And it has been quite painful for me to watch many
of my coworkers -- some of whom I'd become very fond -- depart,
never to return.
I've served my church this year by preaching on occasion.
And in recent months, I've been serving as Worship Coordinator.
In April, we hosted a living room performance of Wallace
Shawn's "The Fever," a disturbing drama performed with searing grace
and theatrical elegance by our dear friend and champion, Mary
Sprunger-Froese. Twelve friends and neighbors gathered in our home
the evening of the event.
In this season of hope, let us not allow our gaze to become
too transfixed on all the glitter and brilliance. Let us also
strive to find wonder in the gentle and mild, the mundane and human.
Let us turn our hearts, minds, and hands to the cause of peace on
Earth.
Love to you,
Richard

Has Sharon had any type of bodywork or body-centered psychotherapy for
relief from the arthritis? Wonderful work is being done with these
therapies to help relieve the pain and even releasing the cause of the
symptoms themselves. FWIW.
Holding Sharon in my prayers and sending her healing thoughts.

My wife has arthritis in her knees. It was agravated by a skiing
accident but the doctor said is was coming anyway. The thing that
helps her the most is our hot tub. Long soaks in the hot water are
what get her through the winter (when cold weather makes her knees hurt
extra often). I've read that doctors and other groups involved in
arthritis often suggest hot tubs to those with arthriris.

| Both of my parents have had rhuematoid arthritis since their 30s.
Staying warm helps of course. Stress is the most damaging external
cause of flairups and progression of the disease. Keeping weight down
is helpful as you might suspect.
If your wife has rhuematoid arthritis save yourself the heartbreak of
countless remedies. It is an auto-immune disease and is still
difficult to treat. Aspirin is probably the greatest treatment
available (with the least side affects). Small doses of steroids taken
daily are the usual treatment and are very helpful. My father's hands
are severely deformed (he's 60) but incredibly he restores old player
pianoes and nickleodians from the ground up. My mother who is also
severely deformed from it types and has worked all of her life (in
fact, staying active is important or stiffness becomes a problem).
My mother would be in a wheelchair today if it were not for the
wonderful inventions of artificial hips and knees. She has had both on
one side and will have her other knee replaced in February. With the
artificial jointss, there's no pain at all and full functionality.

| Please post in the BubbaNote:
-------------------------------------------
Well, folks, ol' Bubba has been hired by (what most consider to be) the best
high school in the best district in the area.
The first day of classes was far beyond any expection that I could have even
hoped for. It was wonderful. Two sections had students which were deemed to be
"hard core", non-learners, disruptive, etc .. I was even given an extra stack of
discipline forms which are to be submitted for such students who disrupt class -
won't mind - etc. These slips are not taken lightly for at a minimum the
issuance of one results in "ISS" (In School Suspension). These two classes were
supplemented by a "Special Education" person to assist me with these classes and
in particular, these students.
At the end of the classes the Special Education assistant told me that "if there
were too many teachers like you there would be no need for people like me".
That made me feel VERY good. I did not issue one discipline form - not one -
there was no need to. The class interruptions were absolutely minimal.
The following boundary conditions, classroom philosophies, were set:
I made it crystal clear - at the beginning of class - that I will be addressed
as "Mr. Beeler". That "sir" IS an appropriate additive to "yes" and "no". That
"thank you" and "no thank you" ARE appropriate. That E-V-E-R-Y-O-N-E's opinion
WILL be respected. That if a student wants to be heard they WILL raise their
hand - while one person speaks the others WILL remain silent. That there is NO
such thing as a "dumb question" - that questions are ENCOURAGED.
I made a major change to "respect must be earned". I told them that I do it a
little differently - I grant, without hesitation, complete respect to each and
every student in the room. I anticipate the same in return. I will do my best
to maintain their respect and I expect the same from them. The respect that is
"given" is theirs to do with as they please - they may keep it and we'll ge
along fine - and learning will take place.
They can give that respect away, or lose it. Learning will be more difficult,
not to mention the fact that it will be very difficult to build that respect to
it's former level. Not impossible, but difficult.
Naturally the first question was "how does one lose that respect?".
One of the BEST ways is to lie to me. If you didn't do your homework because,
you say, your mother was sick and you had to take care of her .. and two weeks
later I find that you were really at a party - bingo - strike one - you're about
9 notches down (on a scale of one to 10) on the "respect" list. Tell me the
truth .. you'll remain on the "10" position of respect - but make no mistake
about it - you will work. Everything carries a consequence and you WILL get
your work done. You may work harder, but you will get your work done and you
will maintain my respect.
Herein lies a tragedy: One girl said "you know, I kind of wish my parents were
like that, I can get away with nearly anything".
I let them know that "I came from Texas-dirt-farmer values. Times have changed
- no doubt about it - but those very same values are just as applicable today as
they were when I was a kid ... and there's little doubt but they'll be just as
applicable when your kids are sitting in this class. If you have any problems
with my classroom philosophy - let me know. Now, let's get to work".
The response was PHENOMINAL. Not one iota of disagreement. Students who (I
was told) never asked for help before asked for help. Students who were "I
don't care about school" came to me and ASKED if they could be in my class.
Ok, I'll admit .. it's a first impression, things may change, but my first
impression was great. Wonderful. I could not have asked for better.
Yes, my feet are tired .. my mouth goes dry from talking so much .. but .. God
it feels good - it feels good the likes of which I have not felt in a long long
time.
Wish me luck folks ..
Bubba

Oh .. one thing I forgot to let y'all know.
I'm also taking some graduate classes. As part of the alternate certification

Ol' Bubba is now a student .. at .. a 100% Catholic university. Saint Thomas

They may have sufficient knowledge of Mathew, Mark, Luke and John .. but .. what

I've finally got some network access. Prodigy is the only on line service
that has a phone number local to me. And it's a 9600 baud line to boot.
I'm still going to sign up with and try Compuserve and America on-line once
I locate their 9600 baud lines. For some reason I can't connect anywhere at
1200 or 2400 baud. I guess I can live with 9600. :-)
Anyway can you forward this out to the distribution list I left you so that
people know I'm alive? [email protected] should get to me for the time being.
The job hunt is the pits BTW. Everyone wants either heavy Unix/C experiance
or several years of C++ or Visual Basic on PCs. Anyone who hopes to have a
career in computers after Digital better be working on one of those things.
I'm writting some Visual Basic software that I hope to market while I'm
looking for a real job. Even if I can't sell anything at least I'm getting
valuble experiance in VB for Windows. My years of VMS appear worthless in
today's job market.

Well, I'm working. Teaching computers to grade school kids - believe it or
not. I'm at two schools (2 days a week at each). In one I teach grades 4-8.
In the other I start with kindergarten (5 year olds!) and go to grade 6.
Fun so far but I've only had a few classes. We'll see in a couple of weeks.
The money is poor but I've got lots of time off. :-)
I'm also trying to write some PC software in Visual Basic. If I can finish
it and sell it that will help. IN any case it beats working at Digital. :-)

Hi! My name is Dave Dawson and I have worked here at
Texas Tech University Business Administration College for the
last 6 months. Before that I worked for Digital Equip. Corp.
for 10 years so I I do have some experience with Vaxnotes. As
a matter of fact I have it on my cluster running right now. Many
of the people here at the College had never seen a well thought
out notes conference before so I have my work cut out for me.
We are currently working hard to bring up a new Web server and
when I saw
this "product" and my experience with Vaxnotes I
thought the marriage might be interesting. :-)

249.48 | Word from Alfred Thompson | CSC32::J_CHRISTIE | Ps. 85.10 | Mon Sep 18 1995 15:50 | 78 |
| I was surprised to receive word from Alfred Thompson yesterday. The
following is his response to my reply:
>I feel bad because your name came up twice to be sure to invite to
>the next C-P dinner. Wouldn't you know it?! It was last Friday night
>in Littleton (I think it was Littleton. I couldn't go either).
Sorry to have missed it. I've had this account for just over a week but I
lost my list of Email addresses. So I have been sending mail as I remember
names and addresses. I only remembered your address today. Your username was
easy but I kept getting stuck on the node name. Maybe I can make the next
get together.
In any case, here is an update you can post if you want.
I spent my first summer after being laid off trying to figure out what I
wanted to do. I knew I didn't want to stay in the computer industry. ie. No
going to work for another computer maker or software house. I also came to
the conclusion that writing code for a living had gotten old.
In a remarkable set of coincidences that I believe can only be the hand of
God, I was offered two part time teaching jobs at Catholic schools. One
school, Infant Jesus (Nashua), is a K-6 school. The other, St Joseph
Regional (Salem), is a K-8 school. So for a year I worked with kids and
computers. K-6 at Infant Jesus where I used computer games etc to backup
real teachers as well as trying to teach some computer literacy etc. At St
Joseph I had grades 4-8. The younger grades I tought keyboarding. The older
grades (6-8) learned word processing, spreadsheets and computer history. It
was great fun. The money was bad and there were no benefits. Well, no
benefits that paid bills. The intangable benefits were great. Hugs from
kindergarten kids can not be beat. At Infant Jesus I was the only male on
the staff. The boys loved having a man on the playground.
Over this past summer I was offered a new job. Full time, teaching computers
at Bishop Guertin High school. For more money and better benefits I had to
take it if only to take care of my family. But there are other good reasons
to be there as well. It's a great school with great kids and a dedicated,
caring and Christian staff. I'm teaching Intro To Computers (mostly
applications using Clarisworks on Macantrash computers) and Pascal
programming. Next semester I will also be teaching C programming. We are
currently using a PDP-11 running RSTS/E for the Pascal course. We hope to
replace it with PCs soon, maybe for next year.
Talk about full circle. A PDP-11 running RSTS/E was the system I used in
college 20 years ago to learn to program. 12 years ago I was in the RSTS
development group at (what was then still called) DEC.
So I'm having fun. Oh, yes, I also have a part time job working in the
computer center at Phillips Academy (Andover). You may have heard about the
recent opening in the English department there. :-) A couple of nights a
week I work helping students figure out what they've done wrong on their
computer. It too is fun.
I miss Notes but not Digital. Leaving Digital was one of the best things
that could have happened to me. But I really never intended to be away from
so many friends for so long. But money has been (and is) tight and until
someone opened a network site that was a local call Internet access was not
in the budget. Now that I have returned to Cyberspace from my sojourn in the
"real world", I hope my old friends will drop me a line and reconnect.
Regards,
Alfred

I thought it was suspicious when I saw an announcement in my
son's high school newsletter welcoming "Al Thompson" to the
staff as the computer teacher!

Subj: Nine months
No, the subject of my message doesn't mean that I'm pregnant. The "nine
months" is how long I've gone without eating red meat. So there.
It is also the title of a movie I haven't seen yet, but I kind of want to
see it because it was filmed in San Francisco.
But the real news is that I've joined the Sierra Club. I was just going
to join the Sierra Singles, which is real active in the Bay Area, and you
don't have to join the Sierra Club to participate in the singles group,
but I went ahead and joined anyway. My ankle has healed enough that I
can play volleyball, so I do that on Saturdays again. We play in Golden
Gate park, at the end that is near Haight Ashbury, and last weekend there
was someone playing bongo drums at a place called "Hippie Hill" while
women were doing hippy-style dances. Sunday I went on a Sierra Club hike
through the park, and we went past a place where people were doing disco
dancing on rollerblades. There was also someone roller blading in a
wedding dress (someone said it was a man, but s/he was too far away to
tell).
Isn't San Francisco great?
My mother tells me that dad has lost a lot of weight and is talking about
quitting the dialysis and going to a hospice to die. I'm flying out
there in a little over a month, so hopefully he'll last that long.
I play board and card games in a funky coffee house on Wednesday nights,
in the Mission district of San Francisco.
I met a few women who placed personals ads over the last few weeks.
Naturally, they weren't the least bit interested in me. They never are.
And there you have it: the story of my life lately. So what's new with
you?
Mike

249.51 | Word from Alfred Thompson | CSC32::J_CHRISTIE | Ps. 85.10 | Sun Oct 29 1995 11:05 | 25 |
| "I've started looking for a Doctoral program. I'd like something connecting
computers with education. I've a few leads but nothing solid. One program
looks sort of interesting but at $7,100/year for three years it's a bit
pricey. Especially with a son headed for college next Fall. Pray for me as I
keep looking. I'd like to teach technology for education to student teachers
some day.
Along those lines, I gave an in-service training session for grade school
teachers a couple of weeks ago. My talk was on what teachers should be doing
to take full advantage of computer labs in their schools. Both groups of
12-15 teachers recieved my talk well. In fact, a principal who I worked for
last year sat in on one talk. Afterwards she told me that I was wasted in
business and was a wonderful teacher. My feet didn't touch the ground for 24
hours. :-) I am convinced now that I did the right thing not staying in high
tech. Though I had some doubts during my first year in teaching.
