When you first embarked upon your journey of discipleship, did you believe it would change your life? In what ways? Does discipleship come with a price? Has the spiritual journey you've experienced met your expectations? Have there been any major surprises or insights along the way? If you had it to do over again, what would you do differently? Do you ever wish you could go back to the way you were before? If someone just beginning their own discipleship journey asked you for advice, what would you say? The provocative questions were originally posed by one of the more attractive C-P moderators. (No, not Mike Valenza!) I have modified them only slightly to suit our purposes here. [I hope you are flattered and not offended, KB] Richard

Err...at the risk of sounding dumb, would someone please elaborate on just what discipleship means ? I don't have a clue. Mike | |||||

I would say briefly that discipleship, in the case of being a disciple of Jesus Christ, is being willing to forsake all to follow Him where He leads you. In general, it means being willing to change your job, your habits, your attitudes, your lifestyle and whatever is important to you as you recognize that it is not what is best for you. It is surrending your life to Jesus so that He may work on it and give it back to you anew - freshly pressed! In other words, a simple commitment (like a marriage vow) with everlasting consequences. I agree with Collis' definition. I would add that a disciple is also a student, someone who is learning. Hence, in the Christian context, a disciple is one who is a student of the Teacher, the Rabbi, the Christ. Discipleship, then, is a learning experience. Peace, Richard |
