159.3 | CHRISTIANS IN SUPPORT OF THE US AND TROOPS | RAVEN1::WATKINS | | Tue Feb 12 1991 19:28 | 13 |
| It is simple. In note 158. those that are christians that do not
support the US in the military action are voicing their beliefs.
I started this note for Christians that do support the US and the
troops so that they too will have a voice for their beliefs.
The only connection to a Christian Prespective note 158 has is that
a church group is reporting protest news.

| Marshall,
note 158 is devoted to what Christian leaders around the world are
saying about the war - in a Christian context. They, like several of us
in this conference, seem to be opposed to one or more facets of the war
in the Gulf. They are not people who might be expected to support the
troops of one faction or another, they are instead the leaders of
various Christian sects - people generally accepted by Christians as
having a high moral code. You have stated your opinions regarding our
duty to our leaders and government in other notes and given it a
Christian perspective in them. I see 159.* as cheerleading.

| Re .3
I found no mention of any Christian groupings in .0 or .1.
I found no mention of any religious tradition, religious affiliation,
or religious values in .0 or .1.
Thank you, Marshall, for clarifying your intended relevance in 159.3.

| I personally do believe that this note is appropriate, although I would
want to remind participants in this topic that it is connection to
Christian teaching, ethics, morals, values and Christian bodies that makes
such a topic appropriate.

| Marshall,
my previous response here was based in part on a quick review of
the first half dozen or so replies to 158. I have since noted that
there is also discussion in that string that is from people who are
obviously not religious leaders, the two of us included. However, that
discussion is centered upon the comments in the news reports and comes
from a "christian perspective". You may note that I have supported the
right of the government to imprison a soldier who refused to obey a
legal, if morally unacceptable, order. Does this not coincide with your
observations of the Biblical call to obey authority ?

| Pastor Jonathan Crosby of the Greenville Church, a bible baptist
church, has stated that now we are at war we must support our troops
and our President. That while we had not actually gone to war before
Jan 15, 1991 that was the time to pray for peace. But now that we
are at war it is time to pray that God would give President Bush the
wisdom to let the Generals run the war.

| Well, sorry Marshall, but I disagree passionately with Pastor Jonathan
Crosby! I believed before Jan. 15th that this war was wrong, and I
still believe that.

| E Grace ! You have your own account ! Congrats.
Marshall; I, too, disagree with Pastor Crosby. If he wants to be led
into a sinful and shameful path such as praying for death and
destruction, that is his error. I pray for our troops, that they might
live to benefit from a resolution which would stop the bloodshed.

| PRAISE GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
KUWAIT IS FREE! THE MURDERS OF IRAQ HAVE BEEN DEFEATED!
I saw on TV an Iraqi soldier stating that he had beaten and killed
Kuwaity people. Then I saw a doctor show us on TV the bodies of
people the Iraqis had beaten and killed. Then I saw Kuwaity men,
women, and children hugging Americans and thanking President Bush
for their freedom.
The Greenville News reports:
"As about 400 people converged on a patriotic rally Friday (3-1-91)
night in Haywood Mall, a sense of disbelief, pride, and joy swept the
crowd as they sang patriotic songs, waved flags and celebrated the
end of the Presian Gulf War."
"The Greenville County chapter of the Red Cross has also sold Operation
Homefront T-shirts, sweat shirts, pins and flags in efforts to raise
money for needy military families."

159.14 | how do you defeat a murder ? | DELNI::MEYER | Dave Meyer | Mon Mar 04 1991 14:46 | 8 |
| Marshall,
I believe you meant "the Iraqi Murderers" rather than "THE MURDERS
OF IRAQ", right ? I also saw on TV the bodies of men, women and
children - non-combatants, one and all - who had been burnt and
mutilated during the war - Iraqis who happened to be too near what was
believed to be a military target when a coalition bomber happened by.
They had no part in the war, neither part of the government nor part of
the military, until they became innocent victims.
