I would appreciate prayer from folks in this conference that we would be able
to resolve some serious financial problems, preferably without losing our
house, also preferably without taking bankruptcy. However, at the moment
I am afraid that one or both of those things may occur. I *think* I can
deal with it -- the idea of "starting over" isn't really too bad :-) --
but I'm not sure how well my spouse will take it.

We have one grown son and another child in college (more $$)!

We have an appointment with an attorney Thursday afternoon to discuss what
options we may have that we are not aware of.

By the way, we can't just "sell the house." We have an underground fuel oil
tank that predates current legal specifications and that would have to be
replaced (more $$) in order to legally sell the property! (Of course, this
little complication should also make foreclosure less appealing to the bank.)

Please pray for guidance and strength for us. Many thanks.

PS - Those of you who do not live in New England may also want to pray that
the recession won't get to your area...

Lord and Lover of our very souls,
I ask most humbly that You walk so very closely with the people
of this household. I ask that their eyes are guided to possibilities
that might be overlooked. I ask that Your comfort relieve their
fears and anxieties. I ask, above all, that whatever happens, each
one is grounded in Love and Hope, which is You.

So be it in Your own Holy name.

Update

No quick and easy answer! The attorney was moderately helpful but not
as knowledgeable as we would have liked. We need to pull together all
our info and go to the bank with some kind of "proposal" or suggestion.
It's in my spouse's ballpark to do that, and depression (due to under-
employment and lack of funds) causes procrastination.

I don't think we are in any immediate danger, but I suspect we will continue
to "live on the edge" for quite awhile to come. Thanks for your prayers.
I will provide a future update whenever we are proactive or receive
threatening letters!

My biggest personal problem regarding all this is to figure out -- sometimes
on an almost daily basis -- how much to pressure my spouse to act and when
to provide "space." I always have to keep judging whether my spouse is
immobilized and needs a push, or whether my spouse needs me to show my
trust by waiting patiently.

The following is an update from the anonymous member of our community who
requested the support of our prayers:
=========================================================================
Sometimes I think the worst trial of all is that things *take* so long!!

We got an informal ok to refinance around New Year's. (Had to go through
Christmas not knowing.) Then things dragged along while the originator
"worked on it."

THEN we heard a rumor that our bank was going under -- so we called our
originator and made sure that we signed the official mortgage application
papers on a Friday, the day the rumor said that the feds would close the
bank.

The bank didn't close. Then the rumor was that it would close Monday
morning -- but it didn't!

The next thing that happened was we got a demand letter for our full
mortgage (not for the larger equity loan, which is still in the bank's
own portfolio), saying that we could not longer pay just the back
monthly payments. Well, I became a basket case!! BUT, when we
called our originator, he said that the collections department had
told him they had to send the letter, but that they were aware that
a new application was in process and would not turn it over to the
lawyers.

Somewhere during this time the bank laid off about 10 people, but it
still hasn't been closed. Rumors start when someone (the feds?)
start calling other banks to see if they want to buy a bank that's
having trouble. Naturally, the banks receiving the calls start
talking...

As of Friday, everything looked good enough that they were going to
call an appraiser to come and look us over.

Needed: Patience and/or tranquilizers!

We got word today that we will close on a new mortgage next Thursday
afternoon We never dreamed that resolving this would take so long...

Business here is New England is still very weak, and the overall
struggle will be ongoing, but now we will be on much better footing --
plus we've learned a few things about the right and wrong ways of
    dealing with a bank!

Thanks for support from my friends here!

Whether it be for duty, honor, country.

.. because they wanted to or because they had to.

.. whether it was at Bull Run, Verdun or Flanders, Pearl Harbor,
Bataan, Guadalcanal, Normandy, North Africa, Anzio, Pusan, Chosin,
Danang, Long Binh, Dak To or Kuwait or a few thousand other stinking
places that you couldn't sell ... but a lot of guys died for.

.. whether they froze their butt off at the Chosin Reservoir or
sweltered at Tarawa.

.. whether they wore the uniform of the United States Marine ... or
the Coast Guard .. or the Army ... or the Navy or the Air Force ...
the Confederacy or the Union.

Officers and enlisted.

Communications, cooks, forward observers, truck drivers, medics, pilots,
mechanics, artillery, intelligence, squad leader ... all soldiers.

Male or female ... black or white or tan ... Protest, Catholic,
Jewish, or atheist.

The great equalizer - death - is what now bonds them together. We all
shared a little piece of Hell for a while.

When I see that long piece of marble with about 50,000 names on it, I
cannot help but think "there but for the grace of God ...". How could I
be so damed lucky ... or ... was I?

This does not mean that you are war mongers. On the
contrary, the soldier, above all other people, prays
for peace, for he must suffer and bear the deepest
wounds and scars of war. But always in our ears
ring the ominous words of Plato, the wisest of all
philosophers, "Only the dead have seen the end of
          war."

                                General Douglas MacArthur

How about a short silent prayer for 1,027 Marines.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

In the early morning hours of 20 November 1943, marines of the 2nd
Marine Division climbed aboard amphibious tractors in preparation
for a landing in the Gilbert Island chain ... Betio Island ... Tarawa
    Atoll.

Four days later Tarawa was secure. The Japanese garrison consisted of
5,000 men. Of these 5,000 only 1 officer and 16 enlisted were alive
after the battle. The marine casualties - 1,027 dead and 2,292 wounded.

Total dead - 6,000. After the battle an accurate measurement of Beito
Island was made: less than 1/2 a square mile - about 300 acres.

Two names were added to the WWII history books ... Guadalcanal and Tarawa.
Others to follow in the next 21 months would include Saipan, Iwo Jima,
Okinawa .... The casualties at Tarawa were consider at that time to be
"high". Later, Iwo Jima - eight square miles of volcanic rock - claimed
    nearly 50,000 casualties.

Four Congressional Medals of Honor were awarded as the result of
individual actions on Tarawa. One of those was awarded to Colonel
David Shoup who later became Commandant of the Marine Corps.

To the 1,027 marines who paid dearly for 300 acres of real estate ...

    David,

This must have been a pretty severe betrayal. Families can
    set aside many past ills.

Since you've asked your mother to apologize, she obviously
knows that whatever it is she did really bothers you (to put it
mildly). She must have some pretty strong feelings about it, too.

Requesting a prayer for a coworkers brother. He has just been
diagnosed with a serious and possibly terminal form of leukemia.

Hey Mom! This is a really great person, can you see it in your great
vision to give him some more time on the planet?

Adonai, we lift this brother to your light, the light of wellness and
wholeness. Destroy that which would destroy him. Praise be yours.
