4.1Welcome!!CSC32::J_CHRISTIEMission of MercyThu Sep 20 1990 15:016
A heartfelt welcome to all who have introduced themselves thus
far, and also to those who have not entered any notes as yet.
It's good to "see" some familiar "faces".

    I bid you peace,

4.2Welcome to all, with a few questions and commentsHANNAH::MESSENGERBob MessengerThu Sep 20 1990 21:2482
I'd like to echo Richard's .1 by welcoming everyone who's entered the
conference. I'm glad to see some of the "conservative" crowd from
CHRISTIAN, and you're even bearing olive branches! I also welcome those of
a more New Age persuasion who I haven't had the pleasure of noting with
yet. Let's see, who did I leave out?... I welcome you, too!

Some of your introductions have interesting statements that I'd like to
follow up on. (If you've already hit "Next Unseen", shame on you!)

"Led by conscience", eh? Sounds like an interesting story. Unless you're
saving it for later, would you like to share it with us? (In a new note,
perhaps, if it's *really* juicy.)

I hope you'll feel welcome enough here to get involved in the discussions,
Harry. I don't think we're trying to set up a "liberals only" conference here,
and from the notes you've written in CHRISTIAN I'm sure you're not to go around
brow-beating the "lost sheep". :-)

OK, Irena, I'm not going to cross examine you by contrasting what you wrote
here with the (mild) reproof you entered in CHRISTIAN. I'm glad you're here
and I'm sure your contributions here will be as loving as they are in
CHRISTIAN and RELIGION.

Re: .6 Jim

> Beyond mere tolerance, I am working towards community.

I like that, Jim. It sounds like it might have come out of a book (that's
a compliment!) but I think that's the direction I've been moving in myself
over the last couple of years.

Re: .12 Guy

> When it

Kids are good at sensing hypocrisy -- or so I've heard. Your story reminds me
of when my brother was about to get married. My brother is pretty much an
agnostic like I am, with maybe a more Eastern slant on things. I was surprised
when he told me that if he had kids he would join a Christian (probably
Catholic, since his fiancee was Catholic) church so that his kids could be
brought up believing in God ("Kids have to believe in something," he said) and
so they'd be part of the community. Even though he'd be going to church too,
it seems to me that it would still be hypocritical for him to go to church and
more or less put on a false front when he didn't believe in God. He should
tell his kids the truth, as he sees it.

Maybe this could be a new note if someone wants to talk about this subject
in more detail.

Re: .the rest

If you've read this far looking for a response to your own introduction,
don't feel left out. I'm sure we'll find interesting things to discuss
in the coming months. Welcome!

Great to hear from someone who is somewhat familiar with Dayton. I
worked in the avlab (as it's affectionately known) in the early 80s. As
for the number of SBC churches around Dayton, a quick count through
the Yellow Pages comes to about 50. I'm partial to one in particular.
Say, was Rev. McMurry the pastor back then?

If you again have the good fortune to visit Dayton you have a
standing invitation to look me up and come to Far Hills with me.

It's interesting that the people participating in CHRISTIAN-PERSPECTIVE
aren't just from CHRISTIAN but also from other conferences like UU and
DEJAVU. CHRISTIAN-PERSPECTIVE is pulling in people who have been excluded
from CHRISTIAN.

I'd have preferred to "reform" CHRISTIAN so that all Christians would feel
welcome there, but that just wasn't possible. If anything, the "one
conference" should be CHRISTIAN-PERSPECTIVE, since it is open to all
varieties of Christianity.

It's encouraging that a lot of people from CHRISTIAN are also participating in
CHRISTIAN-PERSPECTIVE. I'd hate to see DEC's Christians split into two camps
that never talked to each other.

    Bob,

I agree with your last paragraph but disagree with the rest.

Without getting into a lot of history, I'll just say that I was and
still am an advocate of questions of (what I guess we can all call)
Christianity by the bible in that "other" conference ;-)

I guess we'll just have to see how God works this all out, eh Bob ;-)

Jim, I think you'll find that this conference has not significantly

folks here who dared not to speak up (or speak out) in CHRISTIAN.

My, I certainly recognize a few people here. I'd like to say hi to Bonnie and
Donald. It's been a long time. Hi, Bob F. I'm looking forward to your
entries. Alfred, remember the discussion in DISCUSSIONS a while ago? I wonder
how things will turn out.

For those of you whom I don't know, I'm sure I'll get to know you in the months
ahead. I'm looking forward to reading what you have to say. I hope we can all
be open-minded and tolerant without appearing to compromise our beliefs.

    Hi Paul,

Gee, I was wondering when you were going to be stopping by. :-)
And thanks very much, I really appreciate the compliment.

That reminds me... remember when we first met? It was not exactly love
at first note was it?! :-) It was in Christian earlier this year, and
although we were sharing similar viewpoints in a topic, on new age type
stuff I think, you entered a reply whose tone really ticked me off.
And not tempering my emotions at all I fired off a response back to you
in Christian, which then instigated a cold war between us?

But with the wonders of modern technology, (notes and E-mail) we've
come full circle haven't we? :-) God is alive and well! I think
S/He can work even easier when our minds and hearts are open. Thank
you for having an open mind and heart and allowing me in to get to know
you and you know me after such a rocky start. :-)

As always Paul, I look forward to your wit, curiousity and evocative
entries! Oooh. I see you've already begun!

I may regret adding this conference to my notebook -- this is such an

going to pretend that I will. It may be that I am just out of touch
with "employee interest" conferences such as CHRISTIAN, RELIGION, etc.
I know what to expect of the notorious Soapbox; that one, I can take it

That's sort of controversial at the moment. You see, that's the same approach
that Mikie Morgan took. Now I happen to think that both you and Mikie should
be entitled to come in here and raise questions and make people think.
However, if the backlash against Mikie's notes results in a more restrictive
set of conference rules, then I'm going to make sure those rules are applied
consistently.

Anyway, welcome to C-P.

Well thank you, Richard.

I felt that God was calling me to teach when I applied to seminary. I
have not felt either able to be a minister or called to a pastorate
ministry. There are too many flaws in my own life - especially my
willingness to follow God where he leads me. I pray this will change.

However, perhaps God will use my teaching abilities, for what their worth,
in places like this notesfile. This is not at all to say that I am not
learning as well, for indeed I am. I do not have all the answers
nor would God want to give me them all (pride is a problem), but I do
desire to share not only what I understand from Scripture, but also why
it makes sense to me.

I also desire to encourage and lift up others when I can here. Any
of you may feel free to "help me" do this. It's hard at times to
encourage those that you disagree strongly with, but if I can pray
for Saddam, then I figure then encouraging each of you shouldn't be
too difficult. :-)

Hello again, Ann.

I, too, lost my mother fairly recently. She died about 5 months ago.
You might want to take a look into "Memorials," Note 163.4. I found
it helped me to bring closure to write about my mother's life, even though
tears were streaming down my face all the while I was writing.

God's peace be with you,
Richard
4.114hello Ann, Welcome...SALEM::RUSSOFri Apr 26 1991 13:3418
 Ann,

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. I hope this conference and the information
from here is of some comfort to you. I welcome you and would like to now
share a few thoughts in the hope of comforting you in this time of grief.
1st off grief is natural. We have several examples of this.. Gen 23:2 where
Abraham wept over Sarah and at John 11:33-35 even Jesus gave way to tears
when Lazarus died. But even though there is a great sadness and loss felt
there is also a hope held out for all of us who have experienced losses.
This is found in many Scriptures such as Isaiah 26:19 and Psalm 37:29 which
give hope for a future re-union with lost loved ones. I would like to share
one more Scripture with you; a favorite of mine. This has helped me through
many hard times: Philipians 4:13. Hope this helps.. and welcome.

                                                             Robin

    Dear Richard:

I am brand new to the conferences and have been with DEC for 4 years.
I think it would be a real blessing to all the readers if you wrote a
short testimony of how you found Jesus Christ as your savior?
Actually, since this conference has the word Christian in it, I am
testing the spirits as commanded in the book of Deuteronomy. I'd love
to hear how you got saved.

    Warmest Regards,

    To Mike Valenza:

The Sermon on the Mount is an inspiring foundation for a lifestyle. I
was reading your opening paragraph and noticed your standing on the
    divinity of Jesus.

I would encourage you to read 2 excellent books. 1 is called Evidence
that demands a verdict, by Josh McDowell. He was an athiest who tried
to prove the claims of Christ to be false. In his two years of
research, he was converted. (He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a law
degree) The other book is called Jesus Christ, Lord, Liar, or
Lunatic. This is written by C.S. Lewis. Even if you don't want to
accept the validity of Christ's claims (Which I pray you do) you will
still get a greater perspective on why strong Christians have high
conviction the way they do. Take care.

I'm glad you stopped by here Bubba and that you feel welcome, for you
are. Everyone brings a unique color or hue to the community, and
we become more vibrant as a result. Oh, and as you surmise, one is not
required to have any particular religious affiliation here and still be
welcome; like you, I do not subscribe to any organized religion, and I'm
a co-mod in this conference! :-) You figgure it. ;-)

RE: Jerry Beeler (Bubba),

I have hesitated commenting on Jerry's arrival
here because we have been business associates and friends for the last 7
years. He was "in" Lubbock when I arrived with DEC. I remember telling
Jerry, during one of his trips back to his home land...Texas, that I had
been asked and accepted the task of being a moderator of CP. His reaction
was typical of people who didn't understand the intent of CP and that is
to provide a forum for *ALL* people and beliefs to discuss their perspective
concerning Christianity. I applaud his "perspective" even if I don't
always agree. :-) So I say welcome to a long time friend.

My understanding is that "Bubba" is simply a local equivalent
        to calling a person "brother".

Out of the southern context, I can imagine it could get
confused with the demeaning "Hey Bub!"

Just gotta tell you folks ...

I think that I've learned more from this conference than I learned from
all of the Sunday School classes (combined) from year 1 of my life to
    year 17!!

I've been reading some of the older notes ... and the newer stuff (like
the Arc of the Covenant). Each and every time I've asked a question I
get a level headed response - no one has tried to "convert" me - no one
has sluffed off my ignorant questions with "I'll pray for you" ...

Whadda you people tryin' to do ... kill me with kindness so that I'll
take a step inside a house of worship and see what it's like again?

Even a C-P dinner to meet me? Wow.

That's it! You people are recruiting!! I knew it! I knew it! There
*is* a method to this kindness!

I know your note was kinda "tongue-in-cheek", but
you have touched on a primary focus of this file and that is to allow
*EVERYONE* room and consideration for their personal views...as long as
    they keep them that way.

I, like you, get frustrated when honest questions are
asked and not answered in the same spirit it was asked. Praying for a
person is fine and I believe in it but along with prayers, honest, real
answers need to be given....even when its..."I do not know".

    RE: 3.36

Simon Szeto died yesterday. He was found on the street after going
for a bicycle ride. That's all I know about that so far.

Simon was my friend. He was a great man of faith as well. A quiet man
whose words were always worth listening to. He was an example to me in
many ways though I will never be his equal. He helped me many a time
with his advise, his willing ear, and his prayers.

As a believer, as Simon was, I know we will meet again in paradise. But
I'll miss him until then. I morn for his family, he leaves a wife and
two sons. I morn for myself and his other friends who are feeling a
great gap in their lives. Simon is with the Lord but his friends on
earth where not ready to see him go.

Dorian,

Warm welcoming hugs from me, although it seems you've been
participating for several months now so it feels like we're old
friends! I especially enjoy your perspective and find much richness
in what you share.

Hmmm, since your SO deals with antique books, perhaps he could offer
suggestions in how I would go about researching Saints of Cornwall.
I've become fasinated with St. Keyne and her 25 (mostly) sisters and
brothers all of whom but one became Saints. They lived in the 6th
century and were the children of King Brychen of Wales. Since they
lived during the time when the old religion was being 'phased out' and
Christianity became prominent in Great Britain, I'm curious as to
their involvement in this 'event'.

I have a list of books, but since they are either published in England
or out of print, I'm not having much luck in locating them. Any tips
would be appreciated. My husband thinks I should write a novel on the
subject based on my intuition and imagination, but I'd first rather
read the 'facts' as recorded in history!

Juan,

Hey, I know you! ;') Good to 'see' you here!

Love to you both,

Thank you for your welcoming words.

Strange: I feel better now that I have introduced myself. As an
"unknown" reader, I always had a sort of "peeping-through-the
	keyhole" feeling. That's gone now.

	To 4.260 Collis.

	>Despite our differing viewpoints (particularly on the
	>subject of what is truly logical to believe), ...

This is a comment predestined to start an argument rather than
a discussion; kind of throwing down the gauntlet. I will not
take it up except to say: after reviewing all the evidence
available to me, I did a great deal of soul-searching to arrive
at my beliefs. Logic played a very minor role in the process
and I neither mentioned logic nor truth in my intro.

	>...I'm glad that you are here...

    	Collis:

Thank you; a most gracious apology. One of the reasons I prefer
discussion to argument is that the need for an apology does not
	usually arise.
It is interesting to note just how easily the spoken (written)
word can differ from the heard (read). I am aware of this and
honestly try to avoid ambiguity (usually falling into the trap
of verbosity): even so, I am frequently misunderstood.
So, for example, with the use of the concept of truth. because
I did not use the word in my intro, I seem to be understood as
having ignored truth in my search for a foundation for my
beliefs. I thought that my reference to "- IMO - overwhelming
evidence" made clear that I had `sought and found' truth. I was
obviously mistaken and it is my turn to apologise.

	Geetings, Derek.

    			>Juan

Nope, it's not too personal, Juan. As soon as I figure it out, I'll let
you know. :^)

Actually, it's rather difficult to put your finger on what generates
such an abrupt change in belief and behavior. If it hadn't happened to
me, I wouldn't have believed it myself. I was at a very low point in my
life and was struggling to keep everything together, when I ran into an
acquaintance who mentioned a women's support group that met at her house
each week. This person swears that she told me it was a Bible study and
I believe her but I never heard those words. If I had, with my hatred
of religion, I would have never showed up. To make a long story short,
the women at that Bible study showed such complete and unconditional
love for me, who should have been a mortal enemy, that it bowled me
over. I went out and bought a Bible and started to read it. Now, I had
read bits and pieces of the Bible years ago, but it didn't make any
sense to me and it didn't apply to anything today so why bother. But
the words I was reading now made much more sense to me and I found them
curiously comforting and uplifting. My friend and I talked into the wee
hours of the morning, every night for about two weeks until I looked up
and realized the tremendous peace and joy that walking with Christ
brings me.

Juan, it's sort of like telling someone at what specific point and why
did you fall in love. It's really hard to put into words but you know
it's there. :^)

    	Steve,

as far as I'm concerned, all roads lead to Rome, as the
saying goes, there are many many roads to choose from and they
all lead back to the same point where we originated from. Some
roads are short, some are long, some are bumpy, some are smooth,
some are the scenic route, and some are harder than others. Each
one of these roads has a name given to them by religious and
    	philosophical groups.

Don't let anyone tell you that there is only *one and only
true road* as I have heard some say in here. Which road is best for

    Hi everybody...'specially you, GB/CZN Richard. (;^) I just popped
in to say hello, and may write something in the multiculturalism topic
eventually, having worked with the largest Hindu cultural organization
in the US for the last year+ now. The president is a good friend of
mine, as are all the board members and their families. He and I were
talking on the phone this evening, and agreed that the only way to
truly bridge the cultural gaps in this world is one-on-one. So that's
what we'll be doing for the next few decades together. I'm really
excited about the prospects. And all that wonderful Indian food I'm
going to enjoy...(;^) Tomorrow at worship committee, I'm going to
suggest that he come and talk at our church about Hinduism and the
culture of India, since we'll be without a minister for the next 6
months or so. (For those of you unaware, I attend a Unitarian
Universalist church which is open to all regardless of religious
    beliefs or lack thereof.) (;^)

You asked for clarification of separation. Separation is a term that
comes from the Bible as a direct command, "Be ye separte from the
world.." This world offers much in the way of lifestyles, but God says
that CHRISTIANITY is a lifestyle. God has revealed what the
Christian life should contain in His Word.

.320 I use the term "fundamentalist" in a broader sense than some
prefer. Technically, it is not as accurate as it could be, as I've
admitted to Collis on occasion, but it saves on a lot of painful
detailing, sort of like lumping all non-fundamentalists together as
    liberals or humanists.

So stereotypes are acceptable in this file? Just want to know the ground
rules.

Still, your characterization (or lumping) is incorrect, even by the sterotype.

By the way, NOW you can "respond to my introduction" as this topic seems

We split into two congregations earlier this year. It seems that the board
of the main church didn't adequately plan for the reduced numbers, and now we
are suffering a budget crisis. So what else is new? It's still a lively
place.

I believe the issue of abortion is much more complex than deciding who
lives and who dies. It is about deciding who has the right to
determine how the body of another person is used.

Choosing when to allow or not allow one's own body to be a vessel for
another is what abortion is about.

Any possibility of you guys welcoming me for who I am as oppose to
    putting words in my mouth?

Oh. And I thought the more significant (and certainly more _permanent_) choice
was about whether to allow someone else's body to be used for medical waste or
to be born. To decide whether the baby lives or dies.

But enough of this rathole.

    Hello Kent,

I know what you are saying about being a hot-head. I was the same,
"I'm right, your wrong" doesn't go very far and people are put on
the defense which means they will stand up for what they think is
right. That happens when one has a mind conversion without a heart
    conversion....something like Peter.
