484.0. "Miami to Orlando driving (time/distance?)" by CONSLT::OWEN (Stop Global Whining) Mon Oct 30 1995 10:16

    A quickie question...

How far (time and/or distance) is the drive from Miami to Orlando?

My wife and I are going in late January, and the plane goes to Miami
first, then a 2 hour layover, then a flight to Orlando, plus the trip
from the Orlando airport to WDW... I was figuring that the total
time/price of the trip from Miami to Orlando might be close to that
of renting a car and driving from Miami to Orlando.

    Thanks,
    Steve

I have this very itenerary for this coming December. (Hopefully
the waters will have receded in the Everglades!) Our travel
agent indicated it is 3 or 4 hours from Miami to Orlando. (Or
maybe we are driving from Homestead which should be similar.)

I'd estimate a closer to 5 hour drive.

I hate to add the fear factor, but from Miami up a bit is a bit unsafe
in comparison to the Orlando area. I'd stay right on the plane, or
fly to Jacksonville. I would not try to do this a night.

From WDW to downtown Miami was a 4.5 hour drive for us. Security and
signage around Miami's airport is dramatically improved these days.
Once you're on the interstates you're fine. Understand the maps and
highways and directions before you start driving so you don't make
any wrong turns.

Driving toward WDW, there may be a new exit following the Kissimmee
exit specially for getting to WDW. I believe it was to be open by now.

    re .all

FWIW, we got back a couple weeks ago. The drive from Miami to Orlando
was about 4 hours including 1 quick stop. Speed limits on Florida's
Turnpike are 65 almost the entire way. I set the cruise control at 73
and the cops I passed didn't seem to care. Tolls are a bit steep
though... it was about $12 each way.

As far as crime in Miami... all of the car rental places are right next
to the airport, and the highway is right there, so there's really very
little (if anything) to worry about.

We figure we lost about 1 to 1 1/2 hours by driving vs. flying. The
drive was pleasant, but there really isn't much to look at. My wife
enjoyed watching the birds along the side of the road that we don't get
    to see up north.

Overall, I was happy with the car rental/driving experience. It was
cheaper than flying from Miami, and it gave us the freedom of having a
car available and not having to worry (and pay for) shuttles to and
    from the airport.
