| "The Legend of Mulan" is the first Disney animated feature to be completely
produced at the Florida facility.
They were immensly proud of this pending accomplishment at the animation
attraction in MGM. It's a story about a young Japanese woman whose
father is killed in a war, so she joins the army and becomes a hero.
It's based on a Japanese poem.

| I want to politely state that I think you are in error.
The title is "The Legend of Fu Lan"
The story is Chinese in origin.
The young woman's father is summoned to war. he is too old to be
expected to survive and he has no sons to go in his place. So his
daughter disguises herself as a man and shows up at the muster
pretending to be his son. She falls in love with one of her comrads
during the campaign and invights him to visit her home after the war
(without letting on the deception), so he is very suprised to go there
and find no son but rather a daughter at the end of the story.
I think you are correct about the production being done in Florida.

| Hmmmm,
I'll check again. I got this information from an official Disney
publication.

| More Disney magic? I was hoping someone might know of the poem and tell us
more. It wouldn't surprise me to find some differences, but...
I also got my information from official sources: the people and displays
at the Animation attraction at WDW, three weeks ago.
This will be fun to figure out...

| My information comes from a document called, "Mickey Monitor" which is
distributed exclusively for Annual Passholders. This document says...
"...new at the Magic of Disney Animation (Disney/MGM Studios), you can
preview concept art for Disney animated films in progress, including "The
Hunchback of Notre Dame", "Hercules", and The Legend of Mulan."
I've also seen it mentioned in other places.

| Well, maybe I got the name wrong, my appologies to all.
However, I toured the MGM studios display in Dec 94, with a Chinese
aquaintance. She was certain it was a Chinese story/Poem, and the
concept art looked Chinese to me, not that I'm an expert.

| Jim,
She may be right. The folks at Disney may have decided to "adjust" the
title and story to suit their needs.

Found on the Internet, REC.ARTS.DISNEY:
The Mulan legend is based on the Chinese poem "The Ballad of Mulan", written
well over a thousand years ago. You can find a translation of this poem in the
book "Sunflower Splendor: Three Thousand Years of Chinese Poetry" edited by
Wu-chi Liu and Irving Yucheng Lo and published by the Indiana University Press.
It is a surprisingly short poem, only 62 lines.
Who has access to a good library?

| I vote we post the whole poem here if it's only that long.
I'll see what I can find locally (Library's in San Antonio, UTSA?)
