436.0. "Is "Geppetto" copyrighted?" by NEMAIL::CARROLLJ (Even a clown knows when to strike) Wed Nov 16 1994 13:54

I suppose this conference is a good a place as any to ask this . . .

Is the name "Geppetto" copyrighted by Walt Disney Co.?

My sister is planning on opening a small upscale toy store and
planning on calling it "Geppetto's Workshop" or "Geppetto's Toy Chest",
and I was wondering if she'd actually be able to use the name - I know
Disney gets mighty upset when someone treads on their trademarks. Any
pointers to where and/or how I could check this would be appreciated...

    	Thanks much in advance...

I think I've seen a couple of stores with this name already (don't ask
me where- either MA or NH).

I believe there is a shop in Disneyland named Gepetto's Toy Chest (I am
in Phoenix this week, so I can'easily check for sure).

To the best of my knowledge, the main characters in Pinocchio (including
Gepetto) are public domain. The name of The Cricket, and the Fox, etc.
are Disney embellishments, and they have been known to sue for using
THEIR representations of the characters without paying licensing fees.

To find out you could call the Walt Disney Company at (818) 560-1000.
