394.0. "Noontime places to play?" by BRAT::JANEB (See it happen => Make it happen) Fri Jan 07 1994 10:20

    Part of our plan is to take the middle of each day off and play to
    avoid the crowds.

    I have some questions.

    Where are some good places to play within WDW at lunchtime? My kids
    are 6 and 8 and love the water and playgrounds. I'd rather play in the
    water. I'm not that interested in motorized craft activities, more
    like waterslides (they can be VERY simple to amuse us) and pools.

    In late April, will this be outdoor swimming pool weather? (By New
    England standards) Are there indoor swimming pools we can get to?

    We're staying at CBR. We can play at any other WDW properties, right?
    Do we have to show that we are staying at CBR? Can we get towels, or
    should we bring some along?

    Thanks for any info!

394.1CBR = Family FunWREATH::SCOPAFri Jan 07 1994 10:3420
    Jane,

    I'm sure your family will love the CBR. When you're there check out all
    the pools but especially the one at Old Port Royale. That has slides
    for the kids. Plus there are playgrounds around Barefoot Lagoon. Parrot
    Cay is also a nice place to visit at the CBR.

    I think you can ask for extra towels if you need them.

    The CBR is a great place for families who want to take a mid-day break
    from the parks.

    It's also suitable for runners who need to get their runs in everyday,
    especially in the morning.

    If you run before Dawn you can even take a dip in one of the pools
    before going back to your room. But take a towel. When you jump out
    of the pool you'll be a bit chilly.....even in the Summer.

394.2I agree...RAGMOP::FARINAFri Jan 07 1994 12:439
    I agree with Mike. The CBR playgound and pools are terrific! My
    nephew loved them. And the Dixie Landing playground looked nice, too
    (I only saw it at night, though). The Port Orleans pool has a dragon
    waterslide that my nephew wants to check out on our trip in July! No
    rentals are required to have fun at these places.

394.3Bikes at CBR or Typhoon LagoonDELNI::ODELLMon Jan 10 1994 08:3415
    If you get bored with the pools at CBR or the weather is too cool,
    you may want to consider renting bicycles for the family. All
    size bikes are available with helmets for $3/hr. or I believe you
    can sign-up for a weeks worth of boat use and bike use for $35.
    The ride around the pond was great on bicycles and gave us something
    different to do.

    Or, if you really like water and you want to get away from CBR for a
    day, pick a warm day and go to Typhoon Lagoon. Pack a lunch, some
    towels and a sandbucket for the kids. There's plenty to do there,
    things for adults and things for children. We loved it when we went
    in early December of '93. Enjoy!

394.4Late April=good swimmingLEDDEV::CULLISONMon Jan 10 1994 09:1021
    My only comment is about late April. I've been down during Patriot's
    day vacation week in late April 3 times in last 5 years and we will
    be going back this year. Weather is usually excellent for swimming.
    Most of our days down it was in mid to high 80's and many days it
    was in the 90's. A totally unheated pool will feel a little cool
    probably in low 70's but very swimmable. I swam in unheated swimming
    pools, went water sking and swam at the Ocean at Daytona beach all
    in April and it was nice. I would say that on average about 5 out
    of 6 of the days we spent there were excellent for swimming. A cloudy
    rainy day was the only reason we would not go swimming. The crowds
    should be reasonable late April this year, main thing to avoid is the
    week before and after Easter which is April 3. Easter in WDW to me
    is nothing but expensive torture.

    Bottom line, late April should be great for swimming anywhere around
    WDW.

394.5Swimming is my favorite activity!CTOAVX::EASTWed Jan 12 1994 10:4711
    Don't forget about River Country. I don't remember how much it costs
    but I know that you and your kids will like the old fashioned swimming
    hole! I was there in early May and it was warm enough to swim. I
    really like the tube rides.

    Just don't forget the suncreen! You can get burnt up worse in
    the water reflection. The one thing you don't want to do is spend
    vacation time with sunburnt children in a Hotel Room.

394.6River Country and noon crowds?BRAT::JANEBSee it happen => Make it happenWed Jan 12 1994 12:577
    How is River Country at noontime? Is it as crowded as everything else
    we were trying to avoid in the middle of the day, or is it fine for our
    mid-day escape?

    It sounds like fun to me.

394.7Swim with the sharksCHEFS::FREEMANGary FreemanThu Jan 13 1994 16:598
    Don't know about May, but noontime at RC in October is fine. No lines,
    plenty of room.

    By way of contrast Typhoon Lagoon was packed - standing room only on
    the "beach". But who goes to TL to lie down??? With a partner and two kids
    (8 and 5) TL is a must on any Disney trip. Hey, why not swim with the
    sharks around noontime - don't forget the suncream!
