352.0. "Disney Planner available for viewing" by ILUVNH::BADGER (One Happy camper ;-)) Fri Jul 09 1993 14:50

Norb McKenna finished viewing the Disney planner and forwarded it on to
me. Now I finished it and asked Norb if he wanted it back. He
suggested that it become a rotational tape for anyone to pick up.
So, lets see if this works.
o If you want to view the tape, put a reply to this note,
o acknowledgement when tape is recieved so we can keep track.
o the next person in line [next reply] gets the tape.
o After that person is done, they mail it to the next person in line.
o NO trip report required, but you may have to review your dreams here.

    The tape [IMO]

Its a quick temp fix for -its. It has good visual and sound qualities.
yes, sterio/surround sound. It shows the parks and resorts.
I can't really see it as a 'planner'. its more a teaser.

Careful! If you don't have plans to go, you may have an uncontrolable
urge to pick up the phone and call the CRO.

I hate to be a downer, but if the mailroom discovers that a "personal

depends on the mailroom personnel (I worked in one group that regularly

within 15 miles of Disneyland, I've never had the urge to
see WDW and the other theme parks until...I joined this

This video sounds great! Maybe some of us so cal, west coasties
could get together and view it.

By the way, according to Bob Sagett on America's Funniest

I disagree Mike. I like DL better than MK at WDW. maybe we need a
different note to discuss the differences and why people may like
one park over the other. I don't disagree that WDW as a whole is
    [currently] larger.

    Mike,

Just from reading this conference, I've figured that out.

I'm hoping Westcot will improve DL's image a bit. And really
the only reason I even go to DL these days is because I have
two kids that go to a summer day camp that includes Disneyland
in their field trip itinerary and when my husband and I
    chaperon, we go for free.

The thought of doing WDW does tend to overwhelm me though. I
think if I were to be able to view a video of it, I would have
an easier time setting my priorities and "must sees".

I got the tape yesterday and viewed it last night. I was real disappointed.
I thought it would show more. It's just a long commercial for Disney with
a succession of very short, almost-snapshots shown while Lumiere sings "Be Our
Guest". I was hoping to see more of the hotels, pools, etc. to help me
decide where to stay next time. Sort of a mini-tour. A "Disney Planner"?
NOT! At least I got a glimpse of Splash Mountain. WOW!

I will send it to Kathy Jette this afternoon.

352.16Thoughts on The Planner VideoWREATH::SCOPAWed Jul 21 1993 11:5347
Maybe we should discuss the Disney Planner more to help people decide
if they want to see it. Lori, you may want to tell everyone exactly
what you expected to see and why you were disappointed.

I can start this discussion by making a few points/observations
    regarding the tape:

      - ALthough it's called a "Planner" it falls far short because it
spends maybe a total of 5 minutes discussing the planning of the
        vacation.

      - It's a planner in the sense that it tries to get you to plan to
        stay on the property.

      - It's a marketing tool that can hook first-timers but it doesn't
        help them plan pe se.

      - The tape lists 13 reasons for staying on the property. Of the 13
only 6 are valid from what I saw.

      - The tape is great for the itis. The -holics will enjoy it but will
also look at the content as being too superficial.

      - I think the video should have been done a bit differently with the
first part introducing the parks, shows, attractions, etc. The
second part of the tape should concentrate more on each resort and
then point out the differences between staying on the property and
staying off the property. I would have shown two families; one
staying on the property and the other staying off the property and
highlighted the differences (paying for parking, access to the
parks, reservations at restaurants, early admission, etc.).

      - I think the video should have also discussed how much time to
allocate on a vacation down there. One woman on the tape says to
stay as long as you possibly can but I think a minimum time should
        be specified.

      - Finally the tape does not talk about cost and I realize that rates
change and that they'd have to change the tape every time a rate
changed. But they could rank the hotels/resorts in order of
expensive to economical. They also could discuss admission a bit
        better.

Of course if this video was perfect we wouldn't need this conference
would we? The best info is still in here.

a teaser, not a planner as I said in .0

It's my kind of tape as it doesn't attempt to ruin the adventure much
like burham's guide. I still hate that book.

anyone doing 'planning' activities would not benifit from
planning activities in the tape. but it'll get you in the mood.

    Hi,

I'm new to this conference, but would like to take a peek at the
video, so please add me to the rotation. I'm taking my wife and kids
(Nick will be 4 on 9/23 and Chris will turn 1 on 10/4), and
accomodations are being provided from 10/31 thru 11/6 by my in-laws at
a timeshare resort called "mumble-mumble Westgate mumble-mumble", but
I still need to make flight arrangements and develop an itinerary for
the week, and hope that the video can help me with the latter.

I'm located at ZKO1-2/C21, and have access to the IDC courier (Hi Kathy,
Mike and the other IDCers in MKO!). Thanks in advance.

I agree with Ed ... the name for the video is misleading. So, use some
discretion when viewing or reading these guides.

The video being passed around was part of the MKC Gold Card promotion.
Now I found that a person in our group has booked a package through the
MKC and has received a WDW "Vacation Planner" (sponsored by Delta). I
haven't watch the video but it appears to be longer (time-wise).

re. 20

>> I thought it was the "Planner" not the MKC video, that was being passed

So did I. Maybe that's why I was disappointed. I received a MKC commercial.
Based on the title of this note, (the title on the video I got said "Disney '93"
and in small print "Magic Kingdom Club - Gold Card") I was expecting more (see
below)

re .16

>> Maybe we should discuss the Disney Planner more to help people decide

>> what you expected to see and why you were disappointed.

Well, I haven't been to WDW since '86, so much of what they have now wasn't
there then - like half the resorts, MGM, Typhoon Lagoon, Pleasure Island,
and alot of stuff at EC. So I was hoping I'd get a look at these newer things.
I expected more of a narrated tour, i.e)

"Here's the MK. It has five lands, Adventure Land, (show a few rides
attractions, eating facilities) Frontier Land, (ditto), Main St. USA,"
        etc.

"On to Epcot Center, where you can enjoy shows and foods from countries
like Japan (show some highlights), Mexico, China," etc. "and see the
ideas of tomorrow in Future World."

Something similar for MGM, Pleasure Island, and Typhoon Lagoon.

"Need a place to stay? How about our newest resort, Dixie Landings
(pan the grounds, show pool, brief glimpse of room, etc.), or
the Grand Floridian (ditto)," etc. for each resort.

Each video clip they showed lasted ONE second! Each resort was allocated
about 3 video clips, with GF having a couple more. I STILL don't know what the
newer resorts look like.

>> - ALthough it's called a "Planner" it falls far short because it
>> spends maybe a total of 5 minutes discussing the planning of the
>> vacation.

I watched it twice and believe it was more like 60 seconds asking you to call
their vacation planner agents (or whatever) to plan your trip

>> - It's a planner in the sense that it tries to get you to plan to
>> stay on the property.

Well, they did discuss other places to stay, too. At least for DL; I don't
remember if it discussed other Orlando hotels.

>> - It's a marketing tool that can hook first-timers but it doesn't
>> help them plan pe se.

If you are a first timer, you probably have no clue as to what you are seeing.
Like I said, it showed a string of 1 second video clips of various sights in
each park. I.e. for MK it showed the monorail, carousel, space mountain
BTMR, lots of characters, etc. with no dialog to indicate what the name of the
rides/attractions were. It briefly discussed a couple of the attractions like
Splash Mountain, Beauty & Beast, Illuminations, Sorcery In The Skies,
SpectroMagic; and identified them by name, but most things were a blur and
went unidentified.

>> - I think the video should have also discussed how much time to
>> allocate on a vacation down there. One woman on the tape says to
>> stay as long as you possibly can but I think a minimum time should
>> be specified.

Actually, they discussed the four day pass and said you'd need at least four
days to see everything at WDW.

re. .17

>> It's my kind of tape as it doesn't attempt to ruin the adventure much
>> like burham's guide. I still hate that book.

Well, I like to see as much as possible. I loved Birnbaum's guide. It helps
the -itis. When I was a kid and WDW first opened, they had a special on The
Wonderful World of Disney that toured the MK, and it took you on all the rides
etc. I thought it was great! Admittedly, when I finally made my first trip
to MK, I felt I had been there before because I had seen everything before (on
TV). But a planner doesn't need to be that detailed to still be useful.

Maybe someone out there has the real Planner they'd be willing to circulate?

352.30Free Disney Vacation Planner Video for FamiliesSALEM::HICKS_GFri Feb 17 1995 09:4534

During a commercial break for the Disney-Nancy Kerrigan
ice skating special the other night, Disney advertised
a number to call to receive a free Vacation planner for
    families.

I suspect that this is much of the same material as on
previous Disney planners, but from the commercial it
    appeared to be updated anyway.

    The number was: 1-800-392-9494.

I called about an hour after the commercial and got
through to a real person (previous vacation planner
numbers that I've called were voice-mail menus) who
asked me a number of questions like my age, how many
times I'd visited WDW before, when I planned to visit
again, how many kids under 13 yrs old, how many 13-18,
etc. Took less than a minute. He said it would be
    sent out in 7-10 days.

I don't know how long they'll keep this video offer
active for - so if you're interested you should
    probably call soon.

If I remember, I'll post a note to briefly describe
how its different than previous vacation planners.
What interested me most was that they made a point
of saying that this one was for families.

Thanks for the number, my son has been watching for it so he can get
the video. It is NOT a Disney number. Disney subcontracts the
business to this answering service. They also subcontract for a travel
agency and will....... you get the message. Since I told them I was
planning a visit in December, I got moderate pressure to have a
'planner' call me to help me prepare my trip.

video should be here in 7 days.

btw, big tip off that it wasn't Disney answering the calls was that
they didn't recognize my voice, and my name didn't pop up when my tel #
    was given. ;-)

I just called too. "Due to the large number of calls" they are no longer
speaking to everyone. I was lead through a series of questions to give them
my information. I had to speak my name and address, and enter digits through
the touch-tone keys for questions about my age, the number of trips to WDW
I've taken, and the year of the last trip. They asked if there were kids in
my household and whether I'd be traveling to WDW with kids. The only other
things they asked were if they could contact me again to make sure that my
video arrived (nope) and whether I wanted to have someone call me to help
plan my trip (nope). It promised the video would arrive within 12 days.

352.34Vacation planner for Families infoSALEM::HICKS_GTue Feb 28 1995 09:0825

Well, just wanted to mention that I did receive my Disney Vacation
    Planner for Families.

Much of it was the same as on previous videos though it did show a
few of the newer things at Disney like Alien Encounter, but no
    Blizzard Beach yet.

Included inside was a "coupon" for National Car Rental. For now
until 3/31 I believe you can get a National subcompact for $99
using one coupon. The other coupon was for a free two-class
upgrade on a rental car. It started where the other left off
4/1/95 I believe and I can't recall how far out in time this
offer was good for other than to say that it applied to my
time of interest - May 6-14.

There was also a small WDW brochure on the hotels and a couple
    of different vacation package deals.

All in all not bad for free, but if you've seen previous Disney
planners there wasn't a great deal of difference. Content was
essentially the same though they used a number of different shots
    of the hotels.
