344.0. "First Disney Marathon" by OPTION::LAZARUS (David Lazarus @KYO,323-4353) Fri Jun 11 1993 13:41

This note is taken from the Running Notes Conference. I was quoted a
rate of $324 for three nights double occupancy (Fri,Sat & sun)
in Dixie Landing . Does that sound like a good deal for mid January?

Disney World is holding their first marathon on January 16, 1994! Imagine
the thrill of running through the Disney parks! My husband and I have already
made our reservations and sent in our applications. We'd like to see more
DEC runners join in.

Here are some excerpts from the application:

"Take a challenging 26.2 mile running race, put the course right in the middle
of the world's number one vacation destination and what do you have? The
first ever Walt Disney World Marathon.

January 16, 1994 is your chance to make history and to see Walt Disney World
as no one ever has -- the course will wind through Epcot Center, the Magic
Kingdom, the Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park, five championship golf courses,
a water park and over a dozen resort hotels -- and you'll never ever step
foot off the Walt Disney World resort!

All entrants receive
	. long-sleeved t-shirt
. the Official Walt Disney World Marathon Program
. Admission to the carbo-loading dinner
. the Official Walt Disney World Marathon Results Book

Runners' resort packages:

Runners' packages start at $119 per person double occupancy for two nights
and include entry fee and pre-race pasta dinner. Special packages that start
slightly higher are available to runners who will be traveling with their
families or individually. (Additional nights are also available at the
special runners' rate)

For more information and resort packages, please call (407) 827-7200 and
reference the Walt Disney World Marathon. "

344.1Final update...entries closed.NOVA::FEENANJay Feenan - DEC Rdb, Worlds Fastest DB EngineThu Sep 09 1993 15:5418
    Just wanted to update this.

The original deadline for the Disney Marathon was Dec 31st....but due
to overwhelming response the registration was cut off a couple of weeks
    ago.

Actually I was driving up RT 89 in NH at 9:45pm and had this urge to
call the office for any messages. I pulled off to a rest stop and made
the call. To my surprise a friend of mine had left an urgent message
that today was the last day and to call a number to register. I tried
the number for about 10 minutes...busy...FINALLY a few minutes before
10 I got through and was told I was probably the last entry since they
    closed down at 10pm.

    Just luck I guess,

344.2Word got out fast!WREATH::SCOPAThu Sep 09 1993 16:3812
    Jay,

They closed it off at 5,000 entries or so from what I've heard. I hope
to get a report from a fellow worker who's going down in January for
that marathon. I'm curious as to the route. I've never done a marathon
(11 miles is my best) but I'm tempted to train for the January '95
marathon. That could be a good little mini-vacation id Mid-Winter.

It'd be tough to train for it 'cause it would be cold up here and
    "warm" down there.

Yup Mike, I just looked at some of the stuff they sent me with my
reservation...it closed at 6000. What is interesting is that the nice
glossy registration form that they originally sent out did not say that
there was a max entry count...only that 'registration forms must be
postmarked by 12-31-93'. Doing a comparision of the new registration
form that they sent me (a copy since I did everything over the phone
they need a waiver signed) this is really the only change on the
    form...
'Race is limited to 6,000 entrants. Registration forms must be
    postmarked...'

I called about this when I first saw this note back in June (thanks to
OPTION::LAZARUS for putting it in here). We got the official entry and it did
say it was limited to the 1st 6000. My wife and I are both entered; we were
afraid that we would not be accepted since we will be walking (with some
jogging). I have done a marathon distance (not a real race) in about 5:45
with all walking. My wife has never done the distance but can jog longer than
me. So, she is training for distance and I am training for increased jogging
tolerance. The course will only be open for 6 hours.

This is going to be the most fun we have had in a long time.

    re:-.1

I actually have both the original glossy entry that I was sent
to me originally, believe it or not it has not entry limit on it.
After I entered (via phone) they sent me a photocopy to have me
sign...this copy actually only had a few things changed on it, one
being the entry limit. Can't wait!!!!

344.6Marathon Trip Report?WREATH::SCOPAWed Jan 19 1994 15:419
    Yo Jay,

How was the marathon? Was it worth the trip? How was the weather? How
was the course laid out? Would you do it again?

    Y'know.....stuff like that.

I actually started working on a mini report down there and had to rush
out to hit China for dinner and then of to PI for a bit of a
celebration. I'll post a full report as a reply here.

The bottom line is ***YES*** it was a big event and I would expect this
marathon to be one of the top 2-3 in the country within the next
    decade.
