308.0. "WDW maps are now on line" by SALEM::BERUBE_C (Where do you think you are? WDW!!) Mon Jun 01 1992 11:29

    Hi All,

One of the benefits of working my new contract in DSM (Digital Services
Manufacturing old CSS to you) here in Salem, is that the New Product
Process Engineering group here has a MD300 scanner and DECImage
software for doing their Assembly/Test Procedures etc.

Well what does this have to do with Disney you ask?

Well it just so happens that I have the following maps of your favorite
place on line in .DDIF format at SALEM::USER$DISK19:[BERUBE_C.WDW_MAPS]

        KENNEDY_SPACE_CENTER.DDIF
        UNIVERSAL_STUDIOS.DDIF
        WDW_DISNEY_MGM.DDIF
        WDW_EPCOT.DDIF
        WDW_MAGIC_KINGDOM.DDIF
        WDW_PLEASURE_ISLAND.DDIF
        WDW_PORT_ORLEANS.DDIF
        WDW_RESORT_1.DDIF
        WDW_RESORT_2.DDIF
        WDW_RESORT_3.DDIF
        WDW_RESORT_4.DDIF
        WDW_TYPHOON_LAGOON.DDIF

To print these, simply print them to a PostScript printer of your
    choice.

WDW_RESORT_1.DDIF through 4, make up the rather large 17" by 24" (roughly)
map I had told you about (in another topic) that WDW just came out
with. To put it together place the pages together as follows

                1 2
                3 4

Since I had to break it up into 8 1/2" by 11" copies of the map prior
to scanning they are slightly off center. BTW this map has the up to
date WDW Resort Transportation Network listed on the bottom.

Also some of the maps print out to be rather busy like Typhoon Lagoon,
Kennedy Sapce Center since they were multi colored and this will be in
B/W. Port Orleans is also a rather busy map.

If any of you recent WDW visitors have maps of the other resorts, I
    could use the following;

Contemporary, Grand Floridian, Polynesian, Disney Inn, Yatch/Beach
Clubs, Dixie Landings, Swan/Dolphin, Vacation Club, Villas, Fort
        Wilderness, River Country, Discovery Island.

if you'd be kind enough to make a copy of it on 8 1/2 by 11" paper,
Mail them to me at NIO/W23, I'll scan it into the system.
NOTE: this offer to scan these maps in as well as keep them in my
account stand as long as I have access to the scanner and my Quota
doesn't get to large on Salem.

Oh I forgot to mention, I'll post a reply here as new maps are added.

308.2new WDW_RESORT_*.DDIFSALEM::BERUBE_CWhere do you think you are? WDW!!Wed Jun 03 1992 08:1212
I've redone the WDW_RESORT_*.DDIF's, in order to make them easier to
line up. Look for the cross hair's and corresponding 4 dashes (2 each
side) in the corner opposite the map border.

Also due to the fact the original map is colored and shaded in order to
highlight the MK Resorts from the Epcot Resort from the Village Resort,
some of the wording is hard to read since the output is in B/W vs
Color, but you oldtimers will know what they are. Also the Exit
marking for I-4 didn't come out, going diagonally from mid right to
lower left they are, Exit 27, 26B and 25B.

308.3how to printSALEM::BERUBE_CWhere do you think you are? WDW!!Wed Jun 03 1992 08:3023
    Oh Yeah,

These .DDIF files are realy .IMG (image files) saved using DECimage
software. Why DECimage defaults to .IMG when saving and DECwrite
defaults to .DDIF when doing a Link to an Image, and UTOX knows .DDIF
and not .IMG I don't know since they are the same (I beleive).

Anyway don't try to edit these with a standard editor, since you'll
only see an empty buffer. To view these files you'll need a DECwindows
terminal (Xterm/Workstation) running either CDA viewer, Utox or
    DECwrite.

To print simply specify a postcript printer queu without any additional
    parameters, like

        print/queu=lps20$nnn file.ddif

On a LPS20 it take less than a minute to print each file, while on a
LN03/postcript it take a while since it loading the fonts. Not sure
about other laser printers since the office area only has the 2
    mentioned above.

308.4PostScript mapsNAPIER::HAGENPlease send truffles!Wed Jun 03 1992 11:4012
I've found that the WDW_RESORT_x.DDIF maps listed in note 308 come out
better if you convert them to PostScript format before printing them.

ex) $ utox wdw_resort_1.ddif/ddif wdw_resort_1.ps/ps

They're slightly larger and much more readable since alot of the shading is
eliminated. Warning...it takes about 5 minutes to convert the file, and
the PostScript file it produces is over 4000 blocks. (It still only takes a
minute or two to print it though.)

The other files I've tried it with (US and TL) didn't make any difference
whether you printed out .DDIF or .PS

> yesterday for someone who is going in August!

Only the location of the Fort Wilderness in relation to the other
resorts/attractions is specified in the WDW_RESORT_*.DDIF maps, I
waiting for a kind sole to mail me the actual map of FW itself. See .0
for those maps I still need.

    Claude

BTW I'm not to pleased with the way WDW_RESORT_*.DDIF came out, due to
the color shading on the original I have, having to reduce at 93% to
get the whole map on 4 8 1/2 by 11" sheets, feeding them through a
DEC MD300 scanner into DECimage, and finally printing on a LPS or LN03R
some of the quality get lost, light shading becomes dark etc. Some day
when I have a lot of time on my hands I'll look for a really good
copier in good working condition here in Salem and redo them, it takes
a little practice to get them copied right so everything lines up,
since I did not cut up my original map into 4 pieces.

Ok thanks to a Moderator who'll remain annonymos (But is over the hill
this summer at his B'Day Bash?) I now have a map of the CBR. I also
uploaded another map from the large map phamplet and named it
WDW_RESORT_5.DDIF, which is basicly a generic map of the Orlando area,
which shows all the major roads leading to WDW.

    Enjoy.

    Claude

BTW if you make a copy of a map to send to me, make sure everything is
legible as well as not to dark if there is shading envolved, since
it'll only darken up when I scan it, and more so when you print it.
Also send me a mail message so I know to expect a map from you.

Well since my afternoon meeting was cancelled, I decided to give it one
more shot, (didn't take as long as I thought it would) I now have a
cleaner and slightly smaller (disk blocks) version of WDW_RESORT_1.DDIF
thru 4. These will be the last time I do these since I can live with
    it.

O.K., I ain't getting this. I've tried a bunch of times to print
one of these babies with no luck. Granted what I know about this stuff
would fit in tinkerbells shoes, but I followed the directions (copied
the file over, sent it to a postscript printer) and I just get a cover
page and that's it. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong??

308.10some more tips on how to printSALEM::BERUBE_CWhere do you think you are? WDW!!Fri Jun 05 1992 09:4724
    Rep to <<< Note 308.9 by BUSY::TBUTLER >>>

    Tom,

Well for starters make sure the queu you are selecting is for a
Postscript printer (ie LPS20, LN03R etc). Also make sure you are not
using a symbol for printing defined in your login.com that might be
specifying a param=(data_type=postscript). What you want to do is use
the standard PRINT command supplied by VMS (assuming your on VMS),
suplling only the /QUEU qualifier to a postscript printer, ie

        PRINT/QUEU=LPS20$PELPS WDW_RESORT_*.DDIF

and it better work (it does for Mike_S and me). If you are using a
symbol defined in your login.com with a qualifier of
param=(data_type=postscript), then the postscript printer will sit
there forever processing, because it's looking for the postscript
command in the file which isn't there.

Note that I don't redefine the VMS PRINT command in my login.com to
point to any specific queu or form etc. I use other symbols like
LPRINT to point to a LN03 or PSPRINT for postscript.

308.12more printing helpSALEM::BERUBE_CWhere do you think you are? WDW!!Fri Jun 05 1992 13:2724
Ok thanks to Bill Abrams we now have another way to print in case you
still can't following my directions, (I haven't had to use the CONVERT
command in ages, I should of thought of this myself, guess I had to do
a lot of memory dumping in order to plan my last trip ;^))

Copy the files across into your account, and assuming you have mega
disk space (5k per file) do the following

         CONVERT/DOC file.DDIF file.PS/FORM=PS

to create a postscript version of the file then issue the print command
as follows (this file will be over 4k blocks)

         PRINT/QUEU=nnn/PARAM=(DATA_TYPE=POSTSCRIPT) file.PS

    Claude

BTW I have created the file WDW_MAPS_READ.ME which describes the files
in the directory, and the 2 methods of printing.

PS I not to concern with the quality of the maps (handwritten circle
etc) since these maps are provided for planning purpose only, once you
go you'll have the opportunity to pick up the real things to decorate
    your office walls with ;^).

Ok, I'm going to answer my own question, since nobody else out there really
seems to care! 8-( Well, at least 1/2 of the answer.

Using UTOX, a product in the assets library, I can convert from DDIF to
many other formats. Only problem is that UTOX requires a Graphics workstation.
Since I don't have one, I can't use UTOX to convert these files.

If any one would mind making MACPAINT or TIFF or PICT versions of these files
for me I would surely appreciate it.

what about XV? It puts out GIF, PM, PBM, X11 Bitmap, Sun Rasterfile,
    BMP, Postscript, IRIS, JPEG, TIFF.

Not sure all the formats it reads in, but I know it reads GIF's and
DECwindows screen... I've used it (and CDA Postscript previewer) to
"copy" Postscript files to BMP format to include into my Powerpoint
    presentations.

Of course you'd still need some type of windows interface...

GIF format. I tried CONVERT/DOC from DDIF to MACPAINT and it works
fine, but the detail is lost since macpaint's resolution is pretty
    crude.

    Now I have THE answer!

The CDA converters will do the job, but the version I have is out of
date and I don't have priv's to install the newest version. Soooo....
Could someone convert these to TIFF for me?

    The command should be :

    	convert/doc file.DDIF/format=ddif file.tiff/format=tiff

Then I can download the TIFF versions and include them in my documents.

    Thanks,
