Surprised not to see a note in here already on Bob Thomas' "Walt Disney: An American Original". I just finished reading it (thanks to a loan from Mod. Lowell!) and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a well written biography of Walt covering his entire life from the midwest aspiring cartoonist through the dreamer that conceived WDW. What most favorably impressed me about the man's story, was the fact that from all appearances in the book, he was as genuine and interesting a person as one would be led to believe only from experiencing his work. At least according to this account, throughout his life there appeared to be no signs of any ulterior motives in either his film work or his entertainment business, above and beyond "do something you'll be proud of that will make the public sit up and take notice". I'd recommend the book to anyone interested in learning more about Walt's humble beginnings and struggling career, as well as in some of the background that went into the Magic Kingdoms. In paperback, approx 390 pp, sans references. -Jack

Well, when you consider that, out of all the biographies of Disney, this is the only one actually sold at Disneyland, I think that should tell you something. - David | |||||

re: .1 I didn't realize that it held a "favored status". But it does make sense given the very positive image painted. I'd be interested in some opposing views as well. What are some of the other bios? I hadn't known there were others. Is there a pointer in here somewhere? -Jack |
