252.0. "Star Trek and Disney" by TLE::FELDMAN (Larix decidua, var. decify) Tue Mar 26 1991 13:33
I've received permission from the author of the following note to cross-post
it here. I wasn't sure whether this deserved a new note, but based on the
promise of more details to come, I thought a separate topic was justified.
(Moderators should feel free to disagree and move this around.)

-< Disney wants the rights to " Star Trek " too ! >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Interesting that you folks mention how MCA - Universal has licensed
the use of " Star Trek " ( the original cast ) for its theme parks.
Universal Studios - Hollywood has had its " Star Trek Adventure "
attraction open for about five years now, while Universal Studios -
Florida will feature several " Star Trek " sequences in its " Screen
Test Theater " attraction, which is due to open shortly.
Anywho, rumor has it that Paramount isn't entirely pleased with
the way MCA has been using its " Star Trek " characters. So, Paramount
executives have supposedly initiated discussions with the Walt Disney
Company about turning the rights for using the " Star Trek " characters
in a theme park setting over to Disney. Supposedly, Disney's quite
enthusiastic about the idea and has worked up several proposals to
show Paramount what they'd do with the " Star Trek " characters --
Only they'd prefer to work with the characters created for " Star
Trek : The Next Generation. "
According to a friend who's on the inside at Disney, the Walt
Disney Company would like to create a " Star Trek : The Next Gener-
ation " special effects attraction for its studio theme park in
Florida. They'd also like to make use of classic " Star Trek " elements
as part of their planned makeovers of Anaheim and Orlando's Tomorrow-
lands, which are scheduled to get underway this fall.
Whether or not Disney can wrestle the rights to use the " Star
Trek " characters away from MCA ( Just as MCA is now trying to weasel
the theme park rights for the Muppets from Disney ) remains to be seen.
Paramount remains mum on the matter -- though they are clearly not
pleased with the hokey way the " Star Trek " characters are handled
at Universal's Hollywood park.
More details later ...
