209.0. "USENET rec.arts.disney" by SENIOR::GOLDBERG (Len --> o &  in 148 days) Fri Jun 29 1990 16:07

There is a proposal to start a Disney newsgroup on the USENET.
Attached is the call for votes. Perhaps someone with more experience
with the DECWRL gateway can reply here as to how to send mail to this
guy. I'm not sure if my vote got out.

I'll keep you posted on the results of this newsgroup.

As I don't know anything about USENET, can you tell us uninformed

Or do we have to somehow get to USENET?

Can you tell that I'm confused. And probably not the only one.

    Linda,

USENET is one of the other networks beside EASYNET (DEC's internal
network), it a public international network which ties universaries and
businesses across the world in which DEC has a gateway to. It's
basicly a unorganized depository of mail messages whose subject field
is used to determine if it's a new message or a reply to one, similar
to notes, but not the same.

As far as Disney.Note going away, Len, Mike and Myself have no
intention at the moment to close/transfer etc., this USENET group would
be totally seperate from Disney.Note. Since both Len and I have
XRN.EXE (DXRN.EXE in my case, uVAX II/GPX workstation) which allows you
to read the USENET, we will be posting (as Len allready has) any useful
    info found there.

For those of you who wish to know more/sample the USENET, you can look
at UFP::XRN conferrence and inthere is a kit note describing how to
install XRN/DXRN on your system and run.

    Actually XRN.EXE, DXRN.EXE and MXRN.EXE are various versions of the X -
windows News Reader for Usenet, based on the various DEC systems
    running DECwindows.

The character cell reader (for VT100's, VT200's etc) is VNEWS.EXE I
think, and the its corresponding conferrence is at CLO::VNEWS.

209.9Using USENET ??BIZNIS::ABELOWMon Aug 06 1990 14:1817
RE: .8

>> Perhaps someone could post a consice explanation of how to access

Any takers out there?? I tried to get set up to access USENET as decribed
in the NOTESFILES referenced in earlier responses to this note, but with no
success. EASY to understand instructions on how to get set up, how to
access USENET, and any limitations that we might encounter in doing so
(e.g., must we have a certain op system, windows, etc....) would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks

David

Well if it's using either XRN/DXRN/MXRN, you need to be running
DECwindows in the appropriate ops VMS/ULTRIX.

See UFP::XRN for the location of the kit.

For me it was a matter of simply coping the files to my account

    define in my login

        $ DXRN:==@mydisk:[my.account]DXRN.COM

    typing

        DXRN SHLUMP

and I was on my way.

When you first invoke DXRN, you don't have a NEWS.RC file and DXRN will
create a new one for you and ask based on the server you are using
(SHLUMP in my case) which newsgroup do you wish to subscribe to (there
are many). Once you finish selecting those you wish, you may then view
the selected newsgroups. DXRN has built in help and is very easy to
    learn.

Now as far as VNEWS I have no idea.

CHARTER

rec.arts.disney.misc
For general Disney discussion and topics that don't fall into any of the
other categories. This includes FAQs, Disney Stores, corporate rumours,
collectables, conventions, music, comics/books, etc. This newsgroup
would replace the existing rec.arts.disney newsgroup, which will be
removed after three months to allow time for traffic to migrate.

rec.arts.disney.parks
For discussion of all the parks (Disneyland, Epcot, Magic Kingdom,
MGM Studios, Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, etc) and related
matters including (but not limited to) the resorts.

rec.arts.disney.movies
The feature movies released to theaters (both animated and live-action),
trivia lists, mass-market merchandising, animation errors, etc.

rec.arts.disney.social
Where any and all fans of Disney may meet to share their enthusiasm with
other fans. For all role-playing activities and long-running scenarios.
For discussion of gatherings at the theme parks, on IRC, etc. For stories,
poems, parodies, and songs written by fans.

rec.arts.disney.television
The Disney Channel, and Monday through Friday daytime and
Saturday/Sunday morning television cartoons and animation. Anything
currently or previously broadcast on television by Disney. Products
marketed by Disney for home viewing on television, including anything
produced by Disney Television Animation or Buena Vista, and Home Video
  releases.

Rationale: Rec.arts.disney is a very high volume newsgroup, with traffic
running 700 to 900 articles per week (according to the July arbitron,
traffic for that month was 3651 articles). There are a number of
frequently discussed topics that are of particular interest to distinct
groups of people that are largely unrelated to each other. Signal to
noise ratio is probably pretty good, if you happen to be one of the few
people who are interested in all of them. Otherwise, the noise level is
very high. The topic of splitting the newsgroup comes up often, always
accompanied by complaints from users about the high volume and the noise.

An informal sampling of all articles posted to rec.arts.disney during a
two-week period in September showed that approximately 30 to 35 percent
of the traffic can be attributed to discussion about the theme parks. It
has been suggested that rec.parks.theme might be an appropriate place to
move this discussion, though it appears that people interested in Disney
theme parks will naturally migrate to rec.arts.disney and educating them
about a related newsgroup in a different hierarchy might not be an easy
task.
