91.0. "Copy Rights ?" by WJO::ARNO (Friendship Doubles Our Joy) Wed May 03 1989 19:27

    		        	Copy Rights

In the news there was a Day Care Center that had
Disney Characters, on the building and Disney Co.
wants her to take them off. It's too bad in away
as Disney is a learning Company for children you
think they would like the idea. There was a
person here that draws nice and she drew her own
and they were on the wall at work and was told to
    take them down !

I always like Disney but like some lady said it seems
like they are out for the Money and not the Children
    anymore...
I have a feeling Walt Disney wouldn't have said that.

How do you feel about this ?

Thanks...I am a Fan for a long time and plan on
until I am older then old :-) ..

91.1Disney is merely protecting itselfATE012::CLAUDEClaude G. BerubeWed May 03 1989 20:4015
Disney like any other major corporation is merely protecting their
assets, (Even DEC has filed suit against another company this weeks for
patent infringement), since the person probably didn't ask for
permision/liscence for display. This is simalr of the US manafacturer
going after bogus copycats of their mechandise.

Sorry to be a wet blanket, but if that's the standard MM Club picture
(Mickey's head with 'sun rays' emanating from behind), it probably
should be deleted. Such a picture was distributed along with other
demos with the first VT125s to go out to the field.

Soon afterwards, telexes flew around to the effect that we did not
have Disney's permission to use those images and they objected to
their inclusion in the demos. We were told to delete all copies
    from any DEC owned systems.

I haven't looked at it on a VT125 yet, so I'm not sure if its the
same one. There was an image of Goofy as well, with the same
    instructions.

91.3It's Business, like it or notEUCLID::OWENYou Are the EverythingWed May 03 1989 23:349
If Disney doesn't say anything, who's to say that others won't
completely abuse the Disney image and characters. The must step
in each time to insure that it doesn't get out of hand. In all
fairness, Disney can't ignore a few yet complain about others.

One thing I really hate is seeing terrible, fake representations
    of Disney characters.

This is more than a fairness issue, it is a legal issue. In order
to protect a copyright, trademark, or patent one must be able to
show that it's abuse was defended whenever and wherever infringement
was detected. Ask the folks who used to own the zipper or aspirin
trademarks. If you don't actively defend it, you lose it to the
    public domain.
